𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀? Glacial meltwater is vital for drinking water, irrigation, clean energy production and maintaining healthy ecosystems. However, due to climate change, glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate, disrupting global water flows and increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). These floods can cause catastrophic downstream flooding with devastating consequences. To address this, glacier preservation must be at the core of climate change strategies. 🌍🛰️𝗗𝗛𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗯𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 As part of the European Space Agency - ESA funded project #WorldWater, DHI is leveraging satellite data to monitor and address the growing threat of glacial lake outburst floods, a critical issue for regions like Greenland. By using satellite technology, DHI and partners are helping to map and track the location and frequency of these glacial lakes, providing crucial data on the scale and potential impact of GLOFs. This is key for understanding and mitigating their severe effects on ecosystems and human communities. Christian Tøttrup, Senior Project Manager at DHI’s Earth Observation Centre of Excellence, explains, ‘Earth observation technology provides a low-cost and accessible method for monitoring surface water dynamics at all scales, and can support physical planning, emergency preparedness and climate change studies globally, including in Greenland. ‘By using satellite data and tools, national stakeholders will be better equipped to plan for glacial lake outburst floods, helping to reduce their risk and impact, and benefiting infrastructure, tourism and the broader economy’, he adds. 💡Curious about this project?
