Nine Arch Bridge in Sri Lanka. Nine arch bridge is a viaduct bridge in Sri Lanka whose ownership is to the Sri Lanka railways, and it is also known as the “Bridge in the Sky”. It can be considered as a remarkable architectural feature which resembles the colonial-era railway construction of the nation. It has built by connecting two bog mountains when constructing the Badulla- Colombo railway. Nine arch bridge is in Demodara, between Ella and Demodara railway stations. Due to the greenery of the surrounding hillside and the architectural importance that it bears steady increase of the tourism in the area can be observed.  When talking about the construction history of the bridge it is generally attributed to P.K. Appuhami, who was a Ceylonese builder in consultation with British engineers. In addition to that point, D.J. Wimalasurendra, was the Chief Designer and the project manager of the ‘Upcountry Railway Line of Ceylon’ who was the distinguished Ceylonese engineer and inventor. Construction has ended up in 1921.  There is only a one track, and it has not been electrified. Total length 91m (300 ft), width 7.6m (25ft), height 24m (80 ft). Construction materials are stones, bricks and cement which holds a nice memory with them. Popular rumours suggest that when construction work commenced on the bridge, the great war began between empires of Europe and the steel assigned for this site was reallocated to Britain’s war related projects at the battle front. As a result, the work came to standstill, leading the locals to build the bridge with stone, bricks, and cement but without steel.  If you visit this immense creation Asanka Cafe will probably the best spot to view the Bridge in the Sky from the northern end of the bridge. From that spot Full curve of the track and the train as it emerges from the tunnel can be nicely observed.   Nine Arch Bridges, also known as the Bridge in the Sky stands proudly, a testament to the engineering and architectural brilliance of the early 20th sanctuary. Why is our work as architects in Africa about making archives? When I was in school writing my thesis, I struggled to find historical materials beyond the architectural masterpieces that emerged after independence. There was almost nothing before that period, which left me frustrated. But this frustration led me to a profound realization. As architects, our work is not just about designing structures; it’s about setting precedents and shaping the future through what we create today. We are, in essence, building the archives for tomorrow. When we are given the privilege of authorship, the ideas and values we choose to promote carry significant weight, as they shape the course of our profession and the built environment. Reflecting on the future of 21st-century architecture in Africa, Francis Kéré wisely remarked, “If we aspire to a better future, we must build with the most accessible materials we have.” His words strike a chord with today’s generation of architects, who are increasingly embracing local materials. The challenge now is not only how to build on a small scale but how to apply these principles on a larger scale—how to create architecture that works across multiple dimensions while staying grounded in the use of indigenous resources.
