There has been a bounty of US $ 10 Million announced for information leading to the capture of a key operative of the North Korean online espionage group "Andariel". The UK, US and South Korea have accused the North Korea-backed cyber group of conducting an online espionage campaign to steal military and nuclear secrets. The US State Department's Rewards for Justice program is looking for Rim Jong Hyok, a North Korean national associated with Andariel, which has been active since around 2009. Andariel targets defense contractors, military, aerospace, nuclear and engineering organizations. Publicly known as Andariel and other names, this RGB state-sponsored cyber group remains an ongoing threat to various industry sectors worldwide including but not limited to entities in the United States, South Korea, Japan, and India. Andariel actors fund their espionage activity through ransomware operations against U.S. healthcare entities. The backbone of Iran's national infrastructure has come under a massive cyberattack. Every form of government including Iran’s Legislature, Judiciary, and the Executive has also been subjected to a cyberattack. The speculation is that Israel may be behind this attack, as a retaliation against Iran’s missile assault on October 1. In addition to this, Iran's communication system, financial system, and military communication have shut down as a result of the cyber offensive. Firouzabadi, a former secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council of Cybersecurity, said that important information has also been stolen as a result. The cybersecurity industry puts far too much focus on breach detection rather than prevention. Here we have a state-sponsored cyber group targeting military and nuclear programs, and they are exploiting a set of well known CVEs that really should have been patched a long time ago. This tactic works because a significant number of organisations (including those running our critical national infrastructure) still haven't patched these CVEs. Imagine buying the best burglar alarm money can buy and then never taking the time to close your front door. If you are putting all of your security budget into internal tools without securing your external attack surface then this is exactly what you are doing (and it will never work).
