European competitiveness is waning and dependency on energy imports continues to burden the economy. Solving these challenges requires a new industrial strategy that utilizes and supports Europe’s leading edge in select clean technologies. We call it Competitive Decarbonization. Our ‘Blueprint for competitive decarbonization of European industry’ outlines how to enhance energy security, drive technological innovation, and bolster competitiveness – in policy and in practice. For example: - By investing in energy efficiency, renewables, and electrification, the EU can reduce gas consumption by 27 billion cubic meters, which equals 80% of last year’s total gas imports from Russia. - Applying one technology alone - variable speed drives - we can save EU industry EUR 22.6 billion in electricity costs annually. These savings can fuel investments in research, innovation, and growth and many more technologies are available. Industry doesn’t need to wait for policy; it can begin its transformation today with proven solutions. However, with a consistent, predictable vision for European industry, policymakers can accelerate adoption and place Europe at the forefront of both global markets and industrial decarbonization.
