A young Ossetian woman wearing traditional ancient Iranian costume The Ossetians are an Iranian-speaking people inhabiting the Caucasus.They are considered to be the descendants of the Alans, an ancient Iranian nomadic pastoral people of the North Caucasus who followed an Indo-Iranian polytheism as their religion.The main population of the Ossetians is concentrated in North Ossetia, forming part of the Russian Federation and South Ossetia respectively. The Ossetian language belongs to the Northeastern Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family.From the 7th century BC to the 1st century AD, Ossetia came under a strong Scythian-Sarmatian influence which was followed by that of the fierce and indomitable Alans.Subsequently, many of the Alans were compelled to migrate westwards with Germanic tribes and had to assimilate into different European nations.However, a small number which remained, went on to survive the Mongol invasions of the 13th century and eventually became the ancestors of the present-day Ossetians.
