Measuring the Immeasurable: The Reality of PR As a founder of a PR agency, I often encounter a common misconception: PR is simply advertising with a different name. This couldn't be further from the truth. While advertising focuses on immediate, quantifiable results like impressions and clicks, PR is a strategic, long-term brand-building exercise. So, how do we measure the impact of PR, especially for startups that often equate it with direct sales? The truth is, PR's impact is often subtle, yet profound. It's about building brand awareness, credibility, and trust. Here are some key metrics to consider: Media Impressions and Reach: - Quantity: Total number of times your brand or message was exposed to the target audience. - Quality: The credibility and relevance of the media outlets where your brand was featured. Share of Voice: Percentage of media coverage your brand receives compared to competitors. A higher share of voice indicates increased brand visibility and dominance. Brand Awareness: Brand Recall: Percentage of your target audience who can recall your brand. Brand Recognition: Percentage of your target audience who can recognize your brand logo or tagline. The Youthforia situation is an egregious oversight — like someone (aka many human beings with clear vision) had to sign-off / approve this product as fit for the beauty consumer. YIKES 😱 Love the creativity that this brand generally brings, but this is exactly why you need a strategic PR/communications agency that is well-versed in beauty and DEI. This PR team would have taken a look at this launch before it went to market and said — NO this is absolutely not it, and if you go-to-market with this product the people, the girlies, everyone will clap 👏🏾 back hard. In-house PR, comms, and consumer engagement teams can become myopic in their perspectives and perpetuate implicit bias within the company. Drinking the company kool-aid isn’t always cool. Outside perspectives are needed, should be welcomed, and actively sought out.
