🌍 Residents’ attitudes toward tourism have always fascinated me, and nothing explains them more simply than Doxey’s Irridex model, developed in 1975. While overtourism became a widely recognized issue in the 2000s, Doxey's model, which explores the emotional evolution of local communities as tourism increases, was ahead of its time. As someone who has researched overtourism extensively (it was the focus of my thesis), I am continually amazed at how Doxey predicted the social and emotional consequences of unchecked tourism growth decades before it became a global concern. His model perfectly captures the shift from excitement to antagonism, a pattern we now see in destinations worldwide struggling with overtourism. 🔎 I am still actively researching this issue today, exploring sustainable solutions and strategies to balance the needs of local communities with those of the tourism industry. It’s an area of study that’s more relevant than ever as we rethink travel post-pandemic. 📚 If you’re interested in discussing sustainable tourism or have insights on managing overtourism, feel free to connect with me! #overtourism #sustainabletourism #tourismmanagement #doxeyirridex #hospitalityindustry #travel

Happy National Tourist Appreciation Day! Today, let’s celebrate the magic of travel and the incredible experiences it brings. From wandering through ancient streets to exploring breathtaking landscapes, tourism enriches our lives and broadens our perspectives, bringing us closer to the world we seek to discover. But as much as we love to explore, we also recognize the impact our travels can have. It's about more than just ticking off bucket list destinations; it's about actively contributing to the restoration and regeneration of the places we visit. That's why we're deeply committed to regenerative tourism 🌏 Regenerative tourism is focused on actively revitalizing the natural environment and local communities. It's about restoring ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening community resilience. It's about enriching the areas that draw us in to begin with, rather than exploiting them. At Fair Tourism, we strive for a world where indigenous people are no longer unwillingly considered an attraction, but instead are empowered to be leaders in community-based tourism (CBT). So here's to all the travellers who understand that every step we take has an impact, and who consciously choose ethical, regenerative, and fair tourism. Let's continue to travel with purpose! #TouristAppreciationDay #FairTourism #communitybasedtourism

🌍✨ Happy World Tourism Day! ✨🌍 Here are some words from our co-founder and Chief Behavior Officer, Milena S. Nikolova, reflecting on the significance of this day: “Many, including professionals in our sector, often underestimate the role that travel can play in shaping a better world. By exploring new places, people grow and become better versions of themselves. If they travel mindfully, they help destinations thrive and support local communities. On this day, I hope we all see the potential of tourism as a responsibility and demand that our sector is taken seriously as one that can truly make a difference for the future.” 🩵 Let’s reflect on how tourism can continue to make a positive impact while preserving the destinations we love for future generations. Whether through embracing sustainable practices, empowering local communities, or protecting cultural heritage, we can all play a role in creating a brighter future for travel. #worldtourismday #sustainabletourism #tourismforgood #responsibletravel #tourismsustainability #tourismday

During Tina's TED Talk in 2021, we were reminded that tourism isn't just "on the line" — it's at the forefront of transformative change. Even though much has evolved since then, one thing remains clear: we're on a journey to redefine the way we approach tourism, from attracting visitors to fostering sustainable growth in our destinations. In our latest blog post, we delve into the crucial concept of shifting paradigms for sustainable tourism growth. From empowering communities to preserving natural resources, each theme holds the key to creating a brighter, more resilient future for tourism. However, we can no longer be observers; we need to be catalysts for change. It's up to us to take the lessons learned and translate them into actionable strategies that drive meaningful impact in our communities, which is the emphasis of our 12-week certificate programme for Tourism Destinations. 🌍 This is not another list of what you must do for sustainable tourism. It's World Environment Day and let's instead look at what destinations can do to make sustainability a default mode for travellers. They have a unique opportunity to lead the way in promoting a more responsible tourism. Here are some key strategies to consider: 🏨♻️ Promote Eco-Friendly Accommodation: Use the carrot strategy to encourage hotels and other forms of accommodation to prioritise energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction. 🌿🌍 Support Local Communities: Support local businesses and promote cultural heritage by encouraging travellers to buy local and cut carbon emissions from transport. 🚶♂️🧳 Encourage Slow Travel: Shift the focus from high-speed, whirlwind tours to immersive experiences that allow travellers to truly connect. Build out walk and cycle paths. 🛤 Invest in sustainable transport options: How travellers get to your destination matters. High speed rail, night trains, charging infrastructure all adds up. Better start now to not fall behind other destinations. Which destinations do you deserve a shout out for their good work? Comment below. #SustainableTravel #EcoTourism #GreenTravel #WorldEnvironmentDay #ResponsibleTravel #travel #destinationmarketing #deeptravel🌱🌿🌏 📸 High speed rail in Italy - reliable and fast.
