Over the weekend I spent a couple of days up in Whistler, BC biking and hiking. It definitely put me in a John Muir frame of mind. If you don’t know who John Muir is, he was a Scotland-born naturalist and author who explored, and trail-mapped a huge chunk of the west in the late-1800s and early-1900s. He also co-founded the Sierra Club. His quote about making dirt paths a part of your life spoke to me as I passed by this sign chugging up a steep trail on Blackcomb Mountain. Its wisdom has so many applications, and well beyond hiking in the mountains. I love a good hike and getting outside on a trail is invigorating and helps clear my brain. It is meditative. Totally present to what’s going on as I work to set a good pace and maintain my awareness (there are bears on these trails don’t you know). While I’m on the trail my senses experience things that otherwise go unnoticed and unlearned. Our busy lives can cause us to over-value speed and efficiency, and lead us to believe we’re being more productive than we really are. That busy life can also deliver a somewhat superficial existence, at play and at work, that can see us missing out on deep, learning experiences, growth opportunities, and chances to help others. At work, it happens in ways we least expect: ↳ Over-fixation on completing our daily to-do list and losing sight of the quality of the to-do experience. After knocking out a task, take a moment to consider something you learned. ↳ Measuring success based on numbers only. Missing the opportunity to notice the new things learned while collecting those numbers. ↳ Brainstorming focused solely on churning out more revenue. Why not notice a new, creative way of making your customers really, really happy.
