After a period when it's not been totally clear if PICO XR was necessarily going to be in the spatial computing for the long haul, it's good to see the news that the Pico 4 Ultra has been announced in China and will begin shipping in early September priced from 4299 Yuan (roughly $600).
At first glance it's a similar setup to the Pico 4, with a similar size and shape and essentially the same displays (based on specs). But the upgrade to a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset and an increased 12GB of RAM (up from Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 and 8GB) should deliver plenty more power under the hood.
The early promotional images have a fairly distinct 'Vision Pro' feel to them, and Pico seems to be leaning into a similar set of use cases including multiscreen working, watching video while travelling, and viewing spatial content like photos and videos. Interestingly Pico promises compatibility with spatial photos and videos from the Apple ecosystem, and even promises screen mirroring from Mac and iOS devices through the Pico Connect app (I'm curious to see how well this works). But, there's also a strong gaming focus, which makes sense given the prevalence of this use case.
There are undoubtedly plenty of questions for Pico to answer in terms of its ongoing strategy for this segment - especially its approach to markets outside of China - but it's good to see that the company is continuing to develop new hardware and pursue new use cases. Hopefully I'll manage to test one out some time soon.
