Last Thursday, I had the privilege of attending the Business of Yorkshire conference, where we heard from inspiring business owners, advisors, and the Mayor of West Yorkshire on the key challenges facing our region’s businesses. A few themes stood out: - Access to Funding: There were important insights into how regional funding is working throughout Y&H with Mercia playing a vital role accelerating growth in SMEs - Breaking Bias: It was encouraging to see an increasing focus on the importance of supporting female founders and female-led businesses, a vital step toward achieving greater diversity in entrepreneurship. At Mercia, we’re passionate about supporting the region’s businesses. Through NPIF II Debt and Equity funds, we’re dedicated to offering tailored funding solutions with a deep understanding of the region's needs. Whether it’s backing a growing business, supporting female founders, or navigating financial uncertainties, we are here to help. Looking forward to collaborating with like-minded businesses and helping shape the future of Yorkshire’s entrepreneurial landscape. #BusinessOfYorkshire #Funding #FemaleFounders #YorkshireBusiness #NPIF #Entrepreneurship #MerciaDebt

Lack of access to business credit and VC funding are the main reasons why Black and Latinx entrepreneurs turn to alternative forms of financing. That's why ESO established the Capital in the Community Fund (CICF) - to provide diverse entrepreneurs with the flexible capital needed to grow and scale their businesses. To date, we've distributed over $3.2 Million to Black and Brown entrepreneurs who have completed an ESO incubator, and are working day in and day out to prepare even more entrepreneurs to access the CICF and invest in their businesses. ➡️ Going Beyond Shop Local and Small Business Week – Let's Give Micro-Businesses Deserve Our Attention ⬅️ Being in Medicine Hat for Small Business Week last week, and up in Lac La Biche for Power Up North earlier in October, made me think. Micro-businesses aren’t just about 'shopping local' – they’re engines of growth, innovation, and resilience. These are businesses built with passion and grit, often in places where larger companies wouldn’t venture. Just like David Schultz, owner of Window Washing Warriors in Lac La Biche, a committed entrepreneur, providing a valuable service and employing a small team. As we close #SmallBusinessWeek, let's shift the conversation to how we can support these entrepreneurs with more than just purchases. From funding, mentorship and expertise, let's think more about sustainable support for Alberta’s micro-business community. They are the foundation for a dynamic local economy and they make our communities the best places to live. Our next summit panel is about what Lancashire businesses need to succeed. Simon Lawrence from Lancashire County Council has highlighted that having political leadership which is fully committed to supporting businesses is vital to business growth. Ann Jordan Dean MBE DL has implored the county to get behind more female founders and ambitious early-stage entrepreneurs, while Professor Miranda B. believes that Lancashire needs to pull together more, and tell a more confident, compelling and consistent investment story regionally, nationally and globally. Nikki Whittle - who sits on Lancashire’s early stage investment board - had told delegates that as well as nuturing a strong VC and angel ecosystem locally, Lancashire also needs to get more interest in (and investment from) funds and syndicates outside of the county. And James Cole from Panache Cruises - a Rosebud customer -shared his story about how his business growth was directly a result of speaking to Rosebud, and the value of Lancashire’s collaborative approach to business support.
