How do you build authentic, meaningful connections in a remote-first, global tech world as a software engineer? I’ve been working remotely for a Japanese tech company while living in Bangladesh for the past 4 years, and honestly, I sometimes find myself wondering—where do I truly fit in the professional network landscape? I’m not deeply connected to the local tech community in Bangladesh, nor to the tech scene in Japan, where my company is based. Networking sometimes feels like a bit of a gray area for me. And how much of a meaningful network is realistically possible, being just a software engineer? How much of it is truly necessary? Would love to hear your thoughts. How do you navigate networking in a setup like this?

The tech industry stands out as a field that prioritizes practical skills and tangible results over traditional qualifications. Unlike other careers that heavily rely on academic credentials or certifications, tech places a strong emphasis on what you can build, solve, or contribute. Employers and collaborators often say, *“Show me your work,”* because in tech, your portfolio speaks louder than your papers. Platforms like *GitHub* and *LinkedIn* have revolutionized how tech professionals showcase their abilities and make meaningful connections. A well-maintained GitHub account serves as your digital portfolio, demonstrating your projects, code quality, and problem-solving skills. Meanwhile, an optimized LinkedIn profile allows you to network with like-minded professionals, share your achievements, and stay updated with industry trends. In tech, success is less about where you’ve studied and more about what you’ve done. ©️THISIT Africa 2025

Provocative post or unpopular truth. If you are a Tech professional don't move to Central Switzerland. The level of provincialism is astonishing. Companies do hire and do advertising in Swiss German.( This assuming you already know German 😏). Software and Tech culture is behind at least 15 years. I say this reading Job description and what they look for. Seems everywhere they have old monolite legacy code base. Wait, they don't even know what a codebase is. Ah, did I say "professionals". That is my kindly warning also for just graduated. Please don't move here, don't accept that offer that to you look a great salary but of course if they propose to you is because here expert would cost much much more. That's the reality. Everything else is nice fake story telling.

Everybody talks about technical skills, but forget this one essential skill: Networking. Every day, I get over 10 messages from the tech community, and many lack this basic skill. Here are 6 ways to effectively network: ✅ Start with a friendly greeting. ✅ Don’t assume they already know you. Introduce yourself. ✅ Stop sending “Hi” and expecting a reply. ✅ Provide clear and concise information when reaching out for help. ✅ Be humble and polite; don’t pressure others for favors. ✅ Stay persistent but respectful. Practice these tips, and you'll build a strong network in no time. --- I am Bilal M. - A Senior Software Engineer. I grow companies with engineering & tech solutions.
