Yesterday was International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year's theme is "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future." ADA Day was observed last week — a commemoration on July 26 of the 1990 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by President George H.W. Bush. The ADA was the first comprehensive law in the United States to protect the civil rights of people with disabilities and prohibit discrimination based on mental or physical disabilities. The day also serves to raise awareness and break down barriers that people with disabilities face.
