Increase your coffee shop's profitability by understanding and optimizing profit margins. Too many coffee business owners don't know their profit margins. They don't know the COGS for each item and they aren't sure what other costs are involved. When it comes to profit and pricing, they've been flying blind. And that's fine – to a point. But eventually, every business owner needs to apply some math to their art so that they can do more of what they love, less of what they don't, and craft a business that enables their ideal life. Let's pretend for a moment that you own a coffee business Choose your strategy Do you roast your own coffee OR Do you buy roasted coffee from an established roasting business? There are several factors to consider: Do you want to build your brand OR Piggyback off someone else's? Do you want to make less money every time you sell thru a pound of coffee beans OR Do you want more money? Do you want to control which coffees you have access to? Do you want to create multiple revenue streams to sell your coffee in? If you're not directly involved in the coffee industry, you're probably wondering why this is even questioned. The legacy of roasting coffee has been sold as a pipe dream for decades by the largest roasting companies in the world because YOU are their customer. Of course they don't want you micro-roasting. Bellwether has turned this decision into an operational strategy decision vs. a fundamental business decision. Anyone can build a roasting business within the Bellwether platform. To the old guard and traditionalists, this is egregious. Don't listen to them. You're the one that has to pay your bills. You're the one that has to operate the business. Not the person who stood next to a Probat for 20 years and that's the "only way to roast coffee." Bellwether is for anyone.

Is now the best or the worst time to start a coffee business? The best, of course—unless you’re a celebrity planning to launch a personal branding coffee line. In that case, maybe change to Ice Tea instead. For everyone else, starting a coffee business today means stepping into a market unlike anything we’ve ever seen before: volatile, fast-changing, and shaped by a world of polycrises. This is the “new normal.” And if you start now, you’ll be building your business for this environment. It’s challenging, yes—but you’re starting with a clean slate and designing for what’s next. And what about continuing a coffee business? Not the worst, but definitely not easy. Running a coffee business today requires effort, structure, tough calls, and a lot of brainpower. I’ve spoken with many small and medium-sized coffee roasters who’ve been in the game for years. Their verdict? “This is our biggest test yet. Even bigger than COVID.” Still, I’m optimistic. Once we have adjusted all of our processes and embrace the new normal, we’ll be ready for 2026 and beyond. It’s all about focusing on the long game—something that often gets lost in the noise of market fears and uncertainty.
