Congratulations to the Chinook Observer for their well-deserved first place General Excellence in the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association awards. The impressive journalism by this small but mighty team serves remote Pacific County with award-winning hard news, timely breaking news and community journalism unmatched by newspapers more than twice their size.

On Monday, the 108th edition of the Pulitzer Prizes was announced. In some ways, the winners and finalists were familiar: important investigations, incisive commentary, tremendous photography. But the list of honorees also highlighted three major ongoing shifts in American journalism: - The best works of journalism are increasingly produced by just a few high-end institutions. - The decline in local and regional newspapers has pushed online-native outlets to the forefront. - The work historically performed by newspapers is increasingly done by other forms of media. There are two ways to look at this broader shift at the highest levels of award-winning journalism. An optimist would look at the unprecedented excellence from online news outlets, especially at the local level, and see signs of tremendous hope. A pessimist would see the shrinking pool of finalist-worthy newspapers and rue the continuing spiraling of the newsrooms that are, in most communities, still the single largest producers of journalism. Both would have strong arguments. https://lnkd.in/gHqKMnCZ #pulitzer #newspaper #journalism #onlinemedia #localnews #nationalnews

I'm an optimist and I still think good journalism, trustworthiness, good stories, and talent will bring value to any media. Interesting article showing how some media companies have identified that having a strong print product also strengthens and brings credibility to the digital product. #media #journalism https://lnkd.in/d77B7dx3

Tomorrow morning (Jan 13th at 10 am PST) I kick off my newest program, BEYOND JOURNALISM, a 5-day intensive for journalists (and writers who sometimes create journalism) focused on creating a new way of doing business. If you're looking for: Higher income More respectful clients (who pay on time!) Work you enjoy A marketing approach you don't hate Confidence about how to talk about your skills A "pivot to content" that doesn't feel existentially problematic ... this is for you! You'll walk away with a new business model, clarity on which clients to reach out to, a permission slip to newly embrace your journalism skillset as actually valuable, plus all the tools you need to do marketing and outreach without feeling nauseated. 5 live sessions One 20-page workbook Plus a personalized review from me with ideas about how to pivot And, as is the case with all my programs, the community is part of the magic. You'll be joined by a cohort of 20+ other journalists who understand the commitment, passion and purpose that brought us into this work in the first place -- plus the challenges that make this work often seem untenable. I'd love to see you there ❤️ Registration details in the comments.

Co-presented a multidisciplinary overview of what JOURNALISM is in real-time/real-life with branding/maketing/Journalist Alana Elias Kornfeld daughter at Manhasset Public Schools. Always special to see my students known and grown from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. Munsey Park, Mrs. Anathael Chery 's class hosted as an all district-wide fifth grade- presentation. Even Shelter Rock School co-participated as they Zoom'd in with questions, insights and inquiries. There was great value as to what a journalist can do with an "Off The Record' piece of information and an 'On The Record.' What do you think the difference is and what are advantages and disadvantages?

It is fairly accepted that you, in order to stay relevant to your audience, and possibly attract new audiences, you need to continiously develop existing and new products. Is there a place in the market for a premium, curated, layouted product with in-depth journalism a few times a week to complement and explain the breaking news that we consume through our favourite devices? What is the best strategy for development of print- and e-paper products in newsmedia?

🏆 Pulitzers Go Digital: A Celebration of Online Journalism or a Farewell to Local News? For the first time ever, more online news sites produced Pulitzer finalists than newspapers did. 🤔 Some day in the distant future, scholars looking back on the evolution (of the American news business will consider May 6, 2024 a date worthy of note. They’ll see it as the day the most prestigious prizes in journalism reflected the changing face of the field itself. 👩🏫 None of those is a flashy new trend for 2024; they’ve each been in progress for at least two decades. But we’ve never seen a Pulitzers announcement like yesterday, when more online-native outlets (12) were honored than newspapers (8). ✅ That’s a big shift. 💊 And it’s not just the number of online finalists, it’s how local they are. It’s not just the big powerhouses like ProPublica and The Marshall Project competing at the highest levels; it’s also coming from places like Montgomery and Jackson, Honolulu and Santa Cruz. 💫 There are two ways to look at this broader shift at the highest levels of award-winning journalism. An optimist would look at the unprecedented excellence from online news outlets, especially at the local level, and see signs of tremendous hope. 👁️🗨️ A pessimist would see the shrinking pool of finalist-worthy newspapers and rue the continuing spiraling of the newspapers that are, in most communities, still the single largest producers of journalism. Both would have strong arguments. 🌟 Check Out the full NiemanLab article : https://lnkd.in/gdeMjRyt #Journalism #PulitzerPrize #DigitalJournalism #OnlineNews #LocalNews #MediaLandscape #JournalismAwards #FutureOfNews #News #Innovation #InvestigativeJournalism #ChangingMedia #LocalNewsCrisis #Journalisme #IndependentJournalism #JournalismFunding #DigitalNative #Technology #JournalismEvolution
