This project was never really about whether the Thunderbirds movie is good or bad. Most of the time it wasn't even about us making a decent documentary (for the first 3 months I don't think Andrew and I even knew exactly what we were making). Instead, it's been about sharing a fun experience with some lovely friends, and honouring the people who gave us that shared experience in the first place by making something as audacious as a $57 million Thunderbirds movie. Here are 3 takeaways from this project that I want to remember: 1. Andrew and I made the thing we wanted to make, not the thing we felt we ought to make. Had our goal been to make a commercially viable documentary we'd have done things differently. We know that a six-hour-long pile of interviews and panels isn't everyone's cup of tea. That's why we haven't charged anyone a penny to watch it (although that's also because we wouldn't be allowed to but sshh). Andrew and I just made the thing we wanted to make, and somehow there are people out there who appreciated that. 2. Setting boundaries and clear expectations was absolutely critical to Andrew and I not killing each other. We may not have known exactly what we wanted to achieve at times, but we respected what the other person said they didn't want, and that gave us a rock-solid foundation to start exploring what we did want. 3. There were many times when I would sit down to edit, look at the footage, and just not be feeling it. Previously, my insecurities around failure might have forced me to unhappily push ahead and produce a mediocre result. Instead, I was kind to myself and trusted that the work would get done when it was ready to get done. I accepted that I would have off-days and built that into my whole editing schedule (yes, there was a spreadsheet). Once you embrace your so-called limitations as part of the process rather than a hindrance to achieving your goals, creativity tends to flow much more freely. Mercifully, I also had a co-producer who patiently accepted that philosophy and trusted I would get the job done on time. Thank you to everyone who has supported this mad project. In 2015, two years after founding Tai, we were on the verge of shutting down. With no office, we met at different restaurants once a week, where the staff often harassed us because some volunteers couldn’t afford drinks. We would sit there for hours, planning how to help others while needing help ourselves. During that difficult time, I watched an animation that sparked something in me. It was about a boy fighting to save the last tree in a world destroyed by greed. https://lnkd.in/eJYREDRh That story lit a fire within me to become an advocate for climate action. At that time, using animation as a tool for social change wasn’t even in our plans. Fast forward a few years, and we have produced over 50 animations addressing different community challenges. The idea of creating an African animation focused on climate issues became an obsession that kept me up at night. One day, at an event supporting my Seghito Creations ltd by Annette Ngongi, I reconnected with a YALI alum (Chikulupi Kasaka) who introduced me to her colleague Joris de Vogel from the Netherlands Embassy. When he asked what I do, I passionately talked about empowering young people to become climate-conscious through animation and comics. It wasn’t part of Tai's core work yet, but that passion must have come through, because later, he told me, "Back then, I was wondering how this vague idea would turn into a concrete product. So all credit to your amazing creative team." Eventually, we received funding to create the climate-focused animation Kijana Kijani, which has been well-received locally and internationally. As I write this, our Head of Programs, Debora Maboya, is in California, USA representing Tai at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival, where Kijana Kijani will be screened this week. This film is among 85 African films that were chosen from different countries. Debora got a chance to meet reputable filmmakers such as T'chaka from Wakanda! On October 20th, it will also be featured at the London Pan-African Film Festival! Key lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs: Don’t wait for perfection—it’s often too late by then. Creativity is key; keep trying new things/ways of doing things and improving. Embrace teamwork—you can’t do it all on your own. Dream big—there’s no tax on imagination yet 😉 ! Cats, Death and Chocolate... Those are just some of the themes we explored with University of Exeter Archaeology and History Department on their Research Away Day. We love giving these workshops where we take a team out of their comfort zone and into the creative space. In this case, we developed 10 short films about what the department is doing. It's great to see everyone really get stuck in with the challenges... AND of course you learn so much by just speaking to historians and archaeologist, like: the connection between cats and overfishing; how we can learn more from lies than from truths; and the history of magic... Good work everyone! The films will be ready soon...
