Rooftop solar capacity added in 2024 is likely to have been about 3.2 GW and set a record. At 17 March 2025 we had processed small-scale technology certificate (STC) claims for 3.09 GW, well above the 3.02 GW at the same date for the 2023 calendar year. 2023 finished at a total of 3.14 GW and we maintain our estimate of 3.2 GW for 2024. We are continuing to receive STC claims for installations that occurred in late 2024. These claims can be made up to 1 year from the time of installation. Although, the majority are claimed within 3 months from the installation date, we received the last claims for 2023 in November 2024 to record the 3.14 GW for that year. The clear trend over the last 3 years is total installations down but average system size and total capacity increasing. The average system size reached 10 kW in 2024. Our Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) data is valued by energy analysts as the source of truth. However, when looking at the actual data for the most recent year it is critical to estimate and adjust for the ‘lag’ effect of the 12 month creation rule for STC claims. The 2025 year has started strongly and at this stage is tracking at a similar level to the record year of 2024. What's stopping the EV sellers from demonstrating the value proposition of EV to the house?
Insightful
ITK principal.
3wData Sunwhiz provided is that there were 75K battery installations in 2024. I think that is what I read. Some one may correct me if I'm wrong. Looking at that chart there are about 320 k installations for the year. This suggests that the battery attachment rate is now over 20%, a big jump from earlier years and consistent with the broader view that batteries are moving from a niche item into the mainstream. EV to the house never mind the grid will need to get a move on because soon household batteries may become the norm rather than the exception. It's worth noting that the people that sell EVs are not the same people that install solar. So upselling a battery is par for the one group, but the EV sellers have no way to demonstrate the value proposition of EV to the house.
