This is a story about imposter syndrome and not assuming the worst — for eight years. At the Bureau of Digital Owner Summit in 2016, I gave a presentation called “Creating a Culture of Empowerment.” It was the first talk Four Kitchens took super, super seriously in terms of production quality. We hired GhostRanch Communications to design a custom slide deck and a video crew to record it. We also printed posters (pictured below) that I handed out prior to the talk. I had presented less polished versions of “Culture of Empowerment” at DrupalCon Latin American and other events, and the feedback was positive. Attendees approached me afterwards with compliments and stories of their own about empowerment (or disempowerment) at their jobs. But after Owner Summit, I did NOT feel good. Something about giving that talk in front of other agency owners left me terribly embarrassed and feeling like a total fraud. I don't remember anyone talking to me afterwards. Some polite acknowledgements, sure, but nothing meaningful. Was my perspective too simplistic or obvious? Did I come across as condescending? Had I wasted their time? I was convinced I had made a fool of myself in front of my peers. I never gave that presentation again, and I always winced when I thought about it. For eight years. Then, a few days ago, Kris LaGreca shared this lovely post. It's is the first positive feedback I've ever received about that talk. I’m relieved it meant something to someone, and I’m shocked that someone not only kept that handout, but FRAMED it! I vividly remember the walk of shame up and down every row in the emptied ballroom, collecting almost every handout I had dropped off an hour-and-a-half earlier. Eight years! I wasted a lot of time feeling embarrassed about nothing. Because making an impression on just one person made it all worthwhile.
This has got to be 15+ years old. Met these folks at an early Owner's Summit and they left an amazing impression on me. Hope everyone at Four Kitchens is still thriving. And thanks to Carl Smith for making those summits happen.
