This information is provided to encourage your full and accurate completion of the application as a key step in the selection process. - Take your time and make sure the application is an accurate representation of your qualifications. - Review the Minimum Qualifications (MQ's) for the position and be sure to demonstrate in your application how you qualify for the position. - While completing your application, keep in mind that the person initially reviewing your application is likely not familiar with your work experience or education. - Provide sufficient details of your duties and responsibilities. Job titles do not tell us about the breadth and depth of your experience. - Include all relevant positions and/or experience in your application. - If multiple positions were held, list each position separately as an individual entry. For example, Social Worker I, II, III would be listed as three different job entries. - Don't use acronyms or slang. Is there a scenario where transparency in local government is ill-advised? Should the public have the right to know who all the candidates are for a City Manager role? Does this transparency negatively impact attracting a large candidate pool? The following article highlights two concurrent City Manager searches in Florida (New Smyrna Beach and Treasure Island). Due to Florida law allowing the names of all candidates to be made public at an early stage in the recruitment process, the news has identified James Slaton as a candidate for both communities as well as identifying other semi-finalists and alternates candidates. My take is that the value of the transparency sought here is significantly outweighed by the damage it does to potential candidates and the hesitancy of employed City Managers to check out these opportunities. The vetting and scrutiny of these candidates needs to be handled by the recruitment firm and the elected officials. Having the public watching the process to me provides no value to the decision making process and reeks of gossiping and reality TV. Stale, boring recruitment brochures are played out and offer little value for candidates seeking their next city or county manager opportunity. Many of them contain boiler plate language or rehash text used in a previous announcement for a different community. Isn't it time we re-imagine what a public sector executive recruitment should look like? City managers are in an incredibly risky and volatile line of work. Resignations and terminations hurt their spouse and children.They can be financially devastating and destroy a person's confidence. Isn't it time we start thinking more about the candidates? Let's provide them with actionable information so that they can do a better job of ascertaining whether they believe they are a good fit for that community and governing body? I want to introduce you to a new series of podcast episodes called: "City Manager Wanted" This is where I interview key individuals involved in the recruitment process with the goal of providing a more detailed and comprehensive examination of the opportunity.
