Thinking about applying Early Decision 2 (ED2)?
It’s becoming an increasingly popular option, especially at smaller liberal arts colleges and some medium-to-large private universities.
Here’s what you need to know:
ED2 pools tend to be small—smaller than Early Decision 1 and far smaller than Regular Decision or Early Action.
This can work in your favor, giving you a better chance to stand out.
Plus, colleges love ED2 applicants.
Why? Because they’re committed, which boosts the school’s yield rate (the percentage of admitted students who enroll).
That said, ED2 isn’t the best choice for everyone.
It’s not always the right strategy if:
1. You’re applying to a school with an ultra-competitive ED2 pool. At places like Vassar, for example, ED2 is often filled with students deferred or rejected from top-tier colleges like Tufts or Brown, making it a tougher crowd to stand out in.
2. You need more time to improve your application. If stronger senior grades or additional achievements will boost your chances, Regular Decision might be smarter.
3. You’re not fully committed. Remember, ED2 is binding, so it’s only worth it if the school is truly your top choice.
ED2 can be a fantastic opportunity if your profile is strong and the timing is right.
