As a person who has spent a large portion of their life being a square peg trying to fit into round holes, this resonates so much with me! When I joined the Drake team, I walked in battered, bruised and burnt out but ready to learn and embrace change. What I never expected was the support I got from day one - I often asked my colleague Niven if I was getting punked, half expecting all the positivity and encouragement to vanish at any moment. Spoiler: it never did. Instead, I found a leader and a team who embraced me - warts and all - from the second (and even before) I joined Drake. I was encouraged to learn and engage in ways that worked for ME, rather than trying to squeeze myself into a cookie-cutter mold that I had struggled with my entire life. Of course, there are stats to meet and processes to follow, but what set this experience apart is that I was encouraged to find my OWN voice - to experiment, get creative, learn from failures, and innovate toward the outcomes we were striving for. Challenges became opportunities for creative brainstorms. Problems were solved collaboratively, not through rigid, prescriptive approaches. For the first time in my professional life, I felt seen, heard, and empowered to truly own my role. My neurospicey heart just SANG! Drake didn’t just give me a job - they gave me the space to thrive as my authentic self. And that has made all the difference. Claire, your unwavering support and guidance has been nothing short of life-changing. I’m so grateful to have such a brilliant mentor and leader in my corner! You are SO appreciated and I have so much respect for all that you are and everything that you do! To anyone who feels like a square peg trying to fit into round holes - there are spaces out there where you don’t have to change who you are to succeed. You just need to find the people who see your value and amplify it. Here’s to being unapologetically ourselves—and thriving because of it, not in spite of it! #recruiterlife #justrecruiterthings #drakeUK #teamleadershipdoneright #DE&I #Neurospicey #ADHD

I tend to regard ADHD as a superpower with two caveats. 1. You have to recognize and develop that power. 2. You have to recognize and manage the associated habits that tend to diminish that power.

This is why receiving a late diagnosis of #ADHD is comparable to grief. It’s like your whole life has been one big lie , and all the times you’ve been told you need to focus more or work harder, stop interrupting or be more organised have chipped away at your self esteemand confidence in yourself to be able to hold down a job. All the times you’ve tried to advocate for your support needs without being overwhelmed or labelled as ‘too sensitive’ or ‘overreacting’ have caused you to burnout or shrink so you don’t stand out from the crowd and you mask to fit in. When you find out that it’s because you have a physical difference in how your brain is functioning and it’s exacerbated by hormones that fluctuate and intensify your symptoms, and your other diagnoses are not why you have felt so low and anxious all of your adult life, it’s hard not to get angry, sad and frustrated at what could have been if you were seen and understood earlier in life and given the support you needed to thrive. So, if you have someone in your life who has just found out that they are neurodivergent, treat them with kindness and compassion as it’s a lot to process and a new identity that could be tough to get used to, but can also bring liberation from a lifetime of trauma and struggle .

Investing in staff development is so important. Here's a few insights from our CO from a learning programme she is undertaking through CO3 Chief Officers 3rd Sector.
I am blessed to work for a progressive organisation, The Northern Ireland Boys' Brigade (BBNI), that recognises the importance of investing in staff training and development. I am fortunate to be a member of CO3 Chief Officers 3rd Sector, an organisation that understands the challenges of the sector and works hard to secure funding and provide tailored, relevant and accessible learning opportunities. I am currently completing 2 courses through CO3 and, in an attempt to properly reflect and apply the learning, I am writing a series of reflections on some of the gems of knowledge that have been so willingly shared by both the course tutors and my learning colleagues. I was once told that ‘sharing is caring’ so in that spirit, I am sharing the reflections here. I hope they strike a chord with someone reading them. Feedback and comments welcome! What’s keeping you behind the podium? The impact of a video shared on day 2 of the CO3 Chief Officers 3rd Sector Leading for the Future programme at Ulster University seemed to be far reaching among the learning group. It appears to now be on a repeat loop in my mind! Behind the scenes in the making of The Greatest Showman, a video was recorded of Keala Settle singing ‘This is me’ for the first time and captures her journey of stepping out from behind the podium. Such a powerful watch on so many levels. The development of inner confidence to step out, the impact it has on others, the impact it has on self when that step is taken….and the power of the end product. As I reflect, the questions I am asking myself: 💡 ‘This is me’ – who is that and do I bring my authentic self to every part of my life? 💡 Who can I encourage to step out from behind the podium and how can I support them to do that? 💡 What projects/ tasks/ decisions would benefit from me stepping out in front of the podium and what is keeping me behind the podium? 💡 What could be achieved if the podium is no longer blocking key decisions? Stepping out from behind the podium is a positive enabler to achieving great things, both for yourself, your team and your organisation. I encourage you to watch the video and see what effect it has on you. https://lnkd.in/eqHR_JeV
