#FindingYourWayintoProductManagement. Getting into product management can feel like trying to find your way through a busy jungle. I started in a different job, but I worked closely with the product team, so I had an idea of what the role was like. Still, making the switch wasn’t easy. I had to deal with people like the HiPPO (Highest Paid Person’s Opinion), who made decisions without looking at data, and the ZeBRA (Zero Evidence But Really Arrogant), who always went with their gut instead of facts. I learned to share my ideas based on data without upsetting anyone. Then there were the Seagull managers who would jump into a project, shake things up, and leave the rest of us to clean up the mess. It taught me how to stay focused even when things were out of control. To move into product management, I needed three things: a manager who supported my goals, opportunities to prove myself, and someone who believed in my potential. I made sure my boss knew what I wanted, I worked hard to show my value, and I kept my expectations realistic. If you’re trying to make a similar move, stay open-minded, keep learning, and be ready for bumps in the road. Changes I have seen in my life since I started a career in product management. The first change I noticed in my life when I started product management is how I seamlessly transfer my professional problem solving abilities to addressing everyday challenges in my life. Prior to when I started out in product management, I was always fond of going to people to help me out with my problems. I didn't think I had the abilities of resolving my own issues and facing challenges alone. But product management taught me that being a product manager means instead of running to people with your problems, people will be the ones to come to you with their problems. This is because your team believes that you're supposed to be able to proffer solutions to whatever problems they might be facing. This shift in my mindset has set me up for excellence and being a better leader. So right now, just the way I'm taught to analyze situations and offer solutions when managing products. I do that now in my life. The second thing that has changed in my life is my communication skills. Naturally I'm not a person that talks. I keep quiet often even when I have things bothering me. Now I'm totally the opposite of that😂😂 I would like to call myself an extrovert now. Because I've been talking and expressing myself lately which is rather unusual. I have constantly been attending meetings that need my contributions on different things. So how will you be quiet? Also, how will you know if your team members have done what was assigned to them if you wouldn't communicate? Let's not even talk about how you'd manage stakeholders without basic communication skills. Product management has taught me the importance of communication and what happens when you lack it in any career paths you find yourself. ••Day Two Post•• ⭐️ The Transition 📉 Transitioning into the role of a product manager was an exciting and challenging journey for me. One of the initial hurdles I encountered was understanding the technical aspects of the role. As a product manager, I quickly realized the importance of having a solid grasp of the technical side of things. While I didn't need to be an expert coder, I needed to understand the language and concepts to effectively communicate with developers and make informed decisions. I knew I had to immerse myself into learning about different technologies, attending workshops, and collaboration. This will allow me to bridge the gap between the technical and business sides, of product management. Over time, I'm getting more comfortable with the technical aspects of the role, and it has greatly enhanced my ability to lead successful products development and drive impactful solutions. Embracing the technical side as a product manager has been a rewarding part of my journey.
