One of the most beautiful callings in my life has been motherhood. As a mom and caretaker to four wonderful children, I understand that parenting can often feel like a full-time job. Motherhood involves nurturing your children, teaching them, spending quality time together, sharing your values, meeting their daily needs, and being present for both the small and significant moments in their lives. Sadly, many mothers who also serve as ECE leaders often feel torn between these two important roles. Transparency: the most overlooked part of parenthood. Why transparency with your kids matter (and how to nail it)? 🔎 Let’s face it, kids are like mini detectives. They can sense when something’s up, and if you’re not transparent, they’ll fill in the blanks with their wild imaginations (or the latest YouTube conspiracy theory). Being open and honest with your kids not only builds trust but also shows them that they’re an important part of the family team. Plus, it teaches them how to handle life’s curveballs with grace and a good dose of humor. WHY IT MATTERS: 🍑 Trust is Everything: When you’re honest, your kids learn to believe you, even when the truth isn’t perfect. 🍑 They Learn from You: Want kids who grow up to be honest and communicative? Show them how it’s done! 🍑 Squashes Anxiety: If they sense something’s wrong but don’t know what, their imaginations can run wild. A little honesty calms their minds. HOW TO DO THIS WITHOUT OVERDOING IT: 🍑 Keep It Age-Appropriate: Your 5-year-old doesn’t need a TED Talk about taxes, but they can understand why you need quiet time to work. 🍑 Admit Mistakes: Saying, “Oops, I messed up!” shows them it’s okay to be human (and maybe a little clumsy). 🍑 Invite Their Questions: Be ready to answer especially those famous “why?” questions. Honesty now prevents confusion later. 🍑 Share the Big Stuff Gently: If there’s a big family change, like moving or a new job, loop them in early and explain what it means for them. Want a real life example? This is a video of Gray and I going over his social-emotional and academic scores from our very first parent-teacher conference (which btw made us even MORE proud of him 🥲). I went over the things he excelled in and the things that he still needs to work on. I mentioned what the teacher said on his challenging situations and told him how dad, mom and him can work on this together. Don’t ever underestimate your child not understanding. Yes, they’re little and young. Yes, they DO fully understand what you are taking about. This isn’t cause for panic, though. There is still plenty of time to prepare before the kiddos head back to school.
