It's time for economists, academics and transport specialists to stand up and be counted. Today's news is awash with articles uncritically accepting the argument that airport expansion is 'good for growth'. Yet the arguments in favour are largely based on 'vibes'. In reality, whether your focus is the economic impacts of tourism and business productivity, macroeconomic stability and the balance of payments, or the economics of carbon pricing, there are gaping holes in the case for expansion. Deutsche Bahn is a perfect illustration of the worst of Germany with a massive underinvestment, lack of planning and horrendous execution. It might be time to call the French! While Germany may be a great manufacturer, in many areas it is on par with other Eurozone members, and in some areas it is shockingly poor. The narrative that Germany is harder working, tax paying and law abiding when compared to other Eurozone members is unhelpful and based on generalisations. For investors, this is a good demonstration of the tension between macroeconomic and ideocyncratic analysis.
