Work That Works: First Nations kids resources for PACT (Protect All Children Today), a not-for-profit that advocates for victims and witnesses in Queensland, ensuring support through the stressful process of giving evidence, empowered through their justice journey. To support a kid’s journey through the court system, victims and witnesses of crime need safe support to interact with, and to understand information around the court process without feeling shame, pressure, or exclusion. We put together a team with backgrounds in the court system and education, and our insights and research tell us that focusing on culturally appropriate narrative-based storytelling is the way that we can hold information better. We also must take into account the nuances of trauma-informed learning, and the impact this will have on a person’s ability to absorb information at a time of heightened stress. So, with that in mind — we created a suite of materials designed specially to engage kids. Leaning more on culturally appropriate storytelling will be an effective tool to increase participation and recall, while gamifying the materials is likely to achieve better outcomes with quite complex and technical information. A really challenging and fun project we worked on in 2024 for PACT! The challenge was to develop an accessible resource for young people who are victims and witnesses of crime, and absorb information around the court process without feeling shame, pressure, or exclusion. A complex combination of cultural, literacy, family, and demographic issues present barriers to engagement with PACT resources, and these realities are further complicated by systemic and entrenched disadvantage. Even our team, some of which had experience in both education and the court system, found the journey and process very complex to understand, so developing a resource that is simplified and engaging for young people was a big challenge! Kids are programmed to engage and learn through games and stories. Our outputs need to reflect this truth while keeping the information relatable and accessible with so much surrounding white noise trying to drown it out. By simply communicating this complex information to the young audience from a new angle, the goal is to engage them on a level that leaves a more indelible mark on their understanding of the court process, while giving them space and respect to be who they are — kids. As a designer, it's sometimes hard to design for complex situations with what we have to work within; but fundamentally with any work, always producing accessible outputs and best communicating information to the key audience they they understand and engage with, is the base level of good design practice.

"This was really useful, engaging and inclusive training which will help me in all aspects of my work." "The session was great, and incredibly valuable. Zoe was phenomenal, engaging, accessible, and made the day very productive." "Fantastic training! Very engaging and used a variety of methods to suit all types of learners, and keep participants interested." That's the kind of feedback I love to see. With 5 out of 9 participants in this cohort saying it was the best training they've ever done, it's nice to see that my 'Visual policy documents' course is really helping people. The course was originally designed to help public servants design placemats, but after half a day learning content design and half a day learning visual design, people who have taken this course find that they use what they've learned in lots of different contexts. So, public service friends - EOFY is coming faster than you think. Could your team use a boost in delivering beautiful, readable, accessible documents? If so, you know where to find me!

Have you used your 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫 lately? Let's learn about three common errors often found with accessibility checkers. Headings, Reading Order and Alt text. What are they? ✔️ 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 Headings in PDF documents are structured to serve as navigational aids for readers. These headings are typically used to organize the content into sections or chapters, making it easier for readers to locate specific information within the document. ✔️ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 Reading order in a PDF document refers to the sequence in which the content is intended to be read. In a properly structured PDF document, the reading order should follow the logical flow of the content, regardless of the visual layout on the page. ✔️ 𝐀𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 Alt text refers to descriptive text that is added to images, graphics, charts, or other non-text elements within the document. Alt text should be concise yet descriptive, providing enough information to convey the meaning or purpose of the image. It should also be relevant to the context in which the image is presented within the document. Accessible documents not only comply with accessibility standards but also contribute to a more inclusive digital environment, where all users can access content. 👉 Need help creating 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬?
