The firm run by a man dubbed "Britain's kindest plumber" faked stories of helping people as it raised millions in donations, the BBC can reveal.

Depher CIC has become a social media sensation in recent years, widely publicising its 'random acts of kindness' towards vulnerable people in the form of free plumbing and electrical work, and even handing out food and cash. Mr Anderson was celebrated as "Britain's kindest plumber". Sounds too good to be true? A BBC investigation claims to have revealed a "pattern of lies and exploitation" including fake social media posts, publishing photos of vulnerable people without their consent (and sometimes against their express wishes) and Mr Anderson allegedly using the CIC's funds to buy a car and house. Depher CIC denies wrongdoing, saying that it is the victim of "bullying" and "trolls". A few predictions - ⚠ Whatever happens, the fall-out will be pretty damaging for the reputation of CICs. That's sad. I still think that - in the right situations - they can be a great model to adopt. ⚠ This may be a major test for the CIC Regulator - which is light-touch, with limited powers and only a skeletal staff. So far, it's largely avoided the public eye since it was set up in 2005. It may find it hard to do so. ⚠ In the wake of the Captain Tom Foundation and other scandals, this may contribute to an ongoing wavering of people's faith in the non-profit sector. The majority still trust charities, especially local ones - but it's been suggested that the level of confidence has been lower in the last 10 years or so than ever before. Stories like this don't help, and they arguably affect society's overall level of charitable giving (although it is hard to separate out the statistics, at a time when personal budgets are pressed anyway). Either way, the real test will be whether these allegations are properly addressed and dealt with.

As the season of goodwill is upon us, have you ever considered leaving money to charity in your Will? Ashlie Cox, a solicitor in our Wills team, discusses leaving a Charitable Legacy in her latest article. If you have a specific charity close to your heart or you have a natural desire to leave a gift to those who need it most after you have died (also called a Legacy,) Ashlie can help guide you through the legal process. Leaving a Charitable Legacy is dealt with as part of your Will and you can leave either a specific item, a fixed sum of money or a share in your overall estate to one or more charities. You may even wish to specify that the Legacy is used for your local community. Organisations like the Norfolk Community Foundation can advise you on where your money could go to, for example. To find out more, please read Ashlie's article here: https://bit.ly/4g3IJ3C Alternatively, please contact Ashlie by emailing ancox@cozens-hardy.com or calling Ashlie on direct dial 01603 724680 or the Private Client team on 01603 625231. #law #lawfirm #will

That site will sell out quick if anything like the 1st phase
Completion on this great 9 unit site on the edge of Ash, near Sandwich took place last week. Finn's 1865 promoted the site through the Dover District Council Local Plan call for sites in 2017 for a local charity devoted to benefiting the parish. A sale subject to planning was agreed, the nutrient issues with Stodmarsh held this up but the site was steered deftly through the process by Karen Banks of Rebus Planning Solutions for Guildcrest Homes. This is just the sort of site that is needed to ensure vitality in our villages. Many thanks for the excellent and patient legal work by Daniel Bridgland at Furley Page Solicitors for our clients and Georgette Russell at Mowll & Mowll incorporating Bowers & Jessup Solicitors for the buyer. #newbuild #GetBritainBuilding #Sandwich #VillageLife
