While habitual routines can make us easy prey, operational routines will give you the advantage over your threat. Waking up, lowering your tarps and facing out in your patrol order before first light and at last light ensures dangerous game and poachers are less likely to move past or into your position un-noticed during high risk periods where day and night transition, under the cover of darkness. A wildfire-specific to-do list that seems very transposable to other disaster recovery efforts for homeowners. Could be very wise to review it and imagine what you would do after a disaster, like a rehearsal. I think it's reasonable to assume that unlikely scenarios are getting more and more possible every year and that there is no "safe" region anymore. (PS: Not a homeowner? GET RENTER'S INSURANCE. Fires, theft, water damage and storms happen to app)
I received this FAQ for wildfire response in California from a colleague at work who went through this problem. I'm sharing it hoping that others may find the information useful and relevant. My heart really goes out to people affected by this horrible fire. Wildfires are some of nature’s worst hazards for people and for P&C carriers. Here are 3 key things property and business owners need to know about the impacts of wildfires: 1. 🔥 Wildfire Risk is Increasing: The frequency and intensity of wildfires are rising due to factors like climate change, drought, and poor land management. This means property and business owners, especially in fire-prone areas, need to be aware of the heightened risk and take steps to protect their assets. 2. Damage Extends Beyond Direct Fire: Wildfires cause damage in various ways: 🔥 Direct Fire Damage: This is the most obvious, but the fire itself can destroy structures and their contents. 💨 Smoke and Ash Damage: Smoke inhalation can be harmful to health, and ash can damage electronics and other sensitive equipment. Insurance adjusters use laboratories like EFI Global to test for soot damages. 🌊 Debris Flows and Flooding: Burned areas are more susceptible to landslides and mudslides, especially after heavy rain. ⚡️ Power Outages and Grid Disruptions: Fires can damage power lines and infrastructure, leading to extended power outages. 3. 📃 Insurance Policies May Have Limitations: Some insurance policies have limitations for wildfire damage. It's crucial to review your policy carefully and consider additional coverage options like: 👉🏽 Extended Coverage: This can cover additional perils like falling trees and landslides. 🪵Debris Removal Coverage: This covers the cost of removing debris after a fire. 🏨 Loss of Use Coverage: This provides living expenses if you can't live in your home due to damage. Homeowners and insurance professionals utilize resources like Temporary Accommodations to demonstrate caring and support for displaced homeowners. ➕ Additional Tips: * Create a defensible space around your property by removing flammable materials. * Have a comprehensive wildfire evacuation plan. * Document your belongings with photos and videos before and after the wildfire for insurance purposes. * Regularly review and update your insurance policy to ensure adequate coverage. By understanding these aspects, property and business owners can take proactive steps to mitigate wildfire risks and protect their investments.
