One key area of Moreton & Partner’s service provision is the support and direction that we can give to organisations to help them successfully participate in the BREEAM Infrastructure award scheme. Formerly known as CEEQUAL it has been subsumed into the Building Research Establishment (BRE) as part of its suite of tools for sustainably assessing all types of infrastructure and construction. The scheme has expanded since its inception in 2003 to become the globally accepted assessment tool for sustainable construction. The assessment can be undertaken either for individual projects or for maintenance contracts over longer periods. Each assessment may encompass the entire project or can be split into its constituent parts of strategy, design, and construction to form various assessment scenarios. The assessment itself comprises an evidence based, points-scoring method of the environmental aspects, such as: the use of water, energy, and land as well as ecology, landscape, nuisance to neighbours, archaeology, waste minimisation and management, and community amenity. New to the assessment has been the inclusion of innovation as a separate assessment able to be included to gain extra credit if applicable. Additionally, the scheme promotes and assesses development of strategic goals and objectives, management and project management approaches from an early stage. Benefits of the scheme comprise improvements to projects and contracts through adoption of good practice as a minimum, such as whole-life costing, waste minimisation and resource efficiency to name but a few. These benefits have been shown over more than 20 years of the scheme’s operation, to bring efficiencies in project costs as well as promote good working practices. Participation in the BREEAM Infrastructure award scheme is a huge opportunity to celebrate the real sustainability and environmental benefits that our infrastructure projects can bring to the community and more.

I am excited to share my latest published article titled "Scheduling and Resource Management in Sustainable Construction Projects" with you. I would like you to read, review, and critique this work. Here are a few takeaways from the article: 🌟 Proper scheduling and resource allocation are critical and vital in the process of integrating sustainable technologies, reducing delays, and minimizing environmental impacts. 🌟 Sustainable construction projects provide long-term financial and environmental benefits. These include reduced operational costs, increased energy efficiency, and higher asset values. 🌟 Developing countries, specifically, countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, still face major issues such as financial shortages, lack of skilled labor, and inadequate infrastructure in their bid to adopt sustainable construction practices. Kindly take a look at the full article through this link: https://lnkd.in/dswXMv2F Thank you.

How ESG in construction can transform SA’s building sector Morag Evans, CEO of Databuild The growing importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria is having a significant impact on how building projects are planned, executed, and managed in South Africa. If anything, it is reshaping the construction landscape when it comes to promoting sustainable development and improving social outcomes. Companies should think of ESG as the three main areas that they are expected to report in. According to Deloitte, the goal of ESG is to capture all the non-financial risks and opportunities inherent to a company's day to day activities. In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards construction companies using green building materials. These sustainable materials reduce the environmental footprint of construction projects. An example of such a project can be found in the Sandbag Houses in Cape Town. These homes substitute brick-and-mortar with sandbags to contribute to eco-friendly construction and affordable housing in the region. Read more: https://lnkd.in/deynQHPG

Construction Management magazine: October 2024 The October 2024 edition of Construction Management, the official magazine of The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Institute of Building (CIOB), is now available. This edition is a Nature Special to mark World Habitat Day (today October 7th) which aims to tackle the pressing challenges and opportunities presented by rapid urbanisation, with a particular emphasis on engaging young people in shaping sustainable cities and communities, see the United Nations website at https://lnkd.in/e8JFASma The State of Nature report, released last year, highlighted a concerning statistic: one in six species in Great Britain faces extinction, see BBC News article at https://lnkd.in/e-6fATUY As a passionate advocate for habitat preservation (it's a cause close to my heart), I particularly commend the CIOB for addressing this critically important issue. This issue contains a variety of engaging articles, with three particularly resonating with me: - The Time is Up: Construction Must Pass the 'Climate Test' (page 10): Caroline Gumble (Dr), CEO of the CIOB, delves into the challenges of achieving a sustainable built environment. - Why Sustainable Construction Makes Commercial Sense (page 14): CIOB vice president Saul Humphrey argues that climate challenges present a significant opportunity for the industry. - Understanding Small Sites and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) (pages 28 & 29): Tara Garraty explains the implications of new BNG rules for developers working with smaller sites. You can access Construction Management magazine through various channels: - Print Edition: Available to CIOB members. - Downloadable PDF: At https://lnkd.in/eJQbVhfG - Digital Flipbook: At https://lnkd.in/eu2tTxth - Website Articles: Visit https://lnkd.in/edbxSnwQ) for comprehensive and well-organised content. Maksim Zaika, project manager for green construction at DELTA Ukraine delivered a presentation on post-war reconstruction strategies and the implementation of bio- and smart-building practices, focusing on European standards and regulations for a circular economy. His talk, titled “Sustainable Development in Ukraine’s Reconstruction Strategies,” highlighted the critical aspects of green construction and the importance of adopting eco-friendly technologies in the rebuilding process. Maksim provided detailed insights into green construction practices, emphasizing the need for sustainable technologies during reconstruction. He shared international examples of similar projects, which could serve as valuable models for Ukraine. Maksim stressed the opportunities arising for Ukraine in the post-war recovery context, noting that integrating innovative approaches, such as renewable resources and energy-efficient technologies, will not only restore the damaged infrastructure but also create new, environmentally friendly spaces that meet modern standards. This will not only improve the quality of life for citizens but also contribute to the country’s overall sustainable development. He also underscored the importance of the Ukrainian Green Building Council (UGBC), which promotes green building practices and technologies in Ukraine. DELTA Ukraine actively supports the development of UGBC, a part of the global World Green Building Council (WGBC) initiative aimed at accelerating sustainable development in the built environment. Through partnerships with organizations like the DGNB German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), UGBC has become a dynamic platform for sharing knowledge and innovations among architects, engineers, developers, and other stakeholders in the construction sector. This collaboration not only enhances the quality of construction in Ukraine but also ensures the country’s steady growth. You can watch Maksim’s presentation in two languages: • Ukrainian — https://lnkd.in/g_jdqwzh • English — https://lnkd.in/gKKfjwwf
