On this week’s episode of SMU Stories, we sit down with Garrett Gilbert, SMU Class of 2013 and former NFL quarterback. Garrett is currently an an insurance broker at Boyd, Shackelford, Barnett & Dixon, LLC (BSBD Group). Garrett began his collegiate career at the The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health. He later transferred to Southern Methodist University, completing coursework toward a Master’s in Liberal Studies while leading the Mustangs on the football field. After entering the NFL in 2014, Garrett spent his early years on several practice squads and made his first in-game appearance with the Carolina Panthers. He rose to national attention in 2019 as the starting quarterback for the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football (AAF), where he led the league in both passing yards and passer rating. Following the AAF’s suspension, Garrett returned to the NFL and went on to start games for both the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Football Team.
