The UK is a magnet for AI companies and attracts investment from across the world. At the NVIDIA GTC conference this week in San Jose, Technology Secretary Peter Kyle spoke about how our new AI Growth Zones will accelerate international investment through improved regulation and dedicated infrastructure, helping to grow our $92 billion AI sector. While in the US, he met with quantum focused Rigetti Computing and tech companies OpenAI, Anthropic, and Vantage Data Centers to further position the UK as a global hub for AI investment, with the latter recently investing £12 billion into UK data infrastructure which will create 11,500 jobs. On 25th February 2025, every UK national newspaper published the same front page to raise awareness about the Make it Fair campaign. The ‘Make it Fair’ campaign was developed to raise awareness among the British public about the existential threat posed to the creative industries from generative AI models, many of which scrape creative content from the internet without permission, acknowledgement, and critically, without payment. The impact on creative businesses and individuals throughout the country – who collectively generate over £120 billion a year towards the UK economy – will be devastating if this continues unchecked, or worse still if the UK government legitimises this content theft. Tech giants should not profit from stolen content. A fair deal for artists and writers isn’t just about making things right, it is essential for the future of creativity.
