Anyone who works with me knows I hate few things more than silly HR rules. It wouldn't be the first time I wrote about how all dumb rules at a company are really a result of not dealing with the 1-2 people who need to be told how their behavior needs to change. Instead of having that tough conversation, the whole team gets subjected to some ridiculous rule that everyone knows is just because of an individual. This is how bureaucracies are born, ladies and gentlemen. Recently I was discussing how to handle a certain situation with our staff and I asked the question "If we were to treat everyone like they are responsible, reasonable adults, what would we do here?" As soon I said it I realized that's my core philosophy on how I want HR to be run at Matchstic. Let's always let that be the primary filter for making people decisions. So many companies treat people like children. I don't think they do it on purpose, but it's the net result of avoiding conflict, achieving uniformity and avoiding nuance when it comes to managing people. People are always gonna be a little tricky, but in the end all deserve to be treated as responsible adults. And if someone can't be trusted enough to be a responsible adult, should they really be a part of your organization anyway?

Everyone hates HR. That includes people who work in HR! The New York Times dropped a story last week covering the difficulties of a modern HR leader. A few quotes that stood out: "Everyone hates us." "We’ve been fighting fires with cans of gasoline." "Everything feels like a fool’s errand." If you work in HR, you’ve probably felt this way. And you've certainly heard this language on expert panels and in conversations with peers. Venting feels good in the moment. We’re emotionally validated and socially connected when we vent. But according to research from Dr. Brad J. Bushman, Professor of Communication and Psychology at OSU, venting can *amplify* anger rather than diminish it. Why? Venting doesn’t solve the underlying problem. So what should we do instead? Former Navy Seal Jocko Willink has a framework: "GOOD" Whenever something goes wrong or doesn't go as planned, respond with the word "good." It’s not just a reflex, but a mindset shift to see the potential benefits or lessons in adverse situations. -> "Some people don’t like us or understand our work." Good. That’s an opportunity to build relationships and better communicate our impact. -> "The CEO moved the goalposts on remote work, DEI, and culture." Good. We’re finally defining the company we aspire to be. I want to be clear: Being in HR is tough. Expectations have changed. The world is a crazy place. Good. Those who persevere will come through this moment better, stronger, and more resilient. More on this week's Heretics segment w/Kelli Dragovich. https://lnkd.in/eEJnh4zV
So the NYTimes says everyone hates HR, now what?

Jeff Vogts, the 2024 Dentons Davis Brown Human Resources Professional of the Year, says there’s a lot that goes into his professional success. HR is not your enemy – HR is your ally. While some say "HR is not your friend," it's important to remember that HR is here to support and protect both employees and the company. Our role is to ensure fairness, uphold policies, and foster a positive work environment. By acting with integrity, respecting company values, and collaborating well, HR will always be your partner in success. HR professionals are committed to improving the employee experience and advocating for fair treatment.
