8 unheard ways to hire a rockstar CFO: 1. Create the job description with a Loom Video of you It should cover the standard stuff: responsibilities, expectations, who they report to. I also include the tools they'll need to use on a daily basis like Notion, Airtable, WhatsApp, Slack, and QuickBooks Online. 2. Be completely transparent about your strengths and weaknesses It shows you have a high degree of EQ and self awareness. I created a Notion doc called BenOS which includes my personality type, human design, sleep chronotype, good/bad habits, strengths, quirks and working preferences (e.g. No 5 minute voice memos please :) 3. Choose a location for the candidate that makes sense for your business I've worked extensively in Latin America and most of the ops for my retreat business is in Costa Rica so I focused on that region while filtering candidates who have prior experience working with US companies. 4. Have multiple stakeholders interview Anyone who will be interfacing with this candidate that is in a Senior role should be conducting an interview. 5. Create a simulation scenario in the interview I always ask candidates to solve a real-world problem as it shows their critical thinking skills in a live scenario. Sometimes people crack under pressure, especially sales reps when I've done role playing in the past. 6. Define your interfacing expectations from the beginning Define the weekly meetings and how the collaboration will work. This is crucial for accounting roles, as their preferences lean towards more structure with less meetings. 7. Test them for alignment with you and the business Have them complete: • Personality Traits • Human Design • Visionary/Integrator Quiz I’m looking for someone with 98%+ integrator traits. I don’t need another visionary who wants to help with "stratetgy", just someone who can execute flawlessly. 8. Outline a 30/60/90-day plan This plan should be realistic, achievable, and ambitious enough so they feel supported and challenged in their new role. P.S. I’m hiring. I hesitate to post this and I hesitate not to…because it’s really important to us. We are hiring for an essential and integral role in our company and we only want the perfect fit. It’s too important to get it wrong.
