I can confirm this is a very seasoned and common tactic in the media world because everyone psychologically loves a gift. The strategy is for the “receiver” to start spreading the love by word of mouth or—in this day and age—post on their socials. Where this can “turn” is targeting high-follower influencers who are immune to these marketing tactics and the money is thrown into the abyss unless you get a pre-mail post commitment. And, in that case, they have to comply with FTC disclosure requirements, which takes away from the perceived “organic” word of mouth strategy. I’ve found it’s better to covet potential customers who have social media presence and still find it exciting to receive these freebies. They will be more apt to post unboxing videos, showcase the brand and thus help spread the message. Is this a free gift or a new form of direct mail? Either way, it will certainly drive my LTV as a subscribing customer! This week, I received a random package from DrinkLMNT. The first edition of their new sparkling waters. Great packaging and upgraded unboxing experience! I suspect it costs about $25 to manufacture and fulfill (these are heavy). I'll stay a subscriber for longer; this felt good. But how many customers will convert like me? There are so many variables, and only time will tell, if this was a cost-effective marketing strategy.
