My cofounder, Kevin and I, have been traveling between Lubbock and Dallas to attend Health Wildcatters. This accelerator program has made a large impact on our startup, Delta Robotics, in its journey developing artificial muscles and getting them to market. See the post below for details about us and the program. I am grateful to be a part of Delta and to lead our technical team developing the Nitinol actuators and control systems that power our ThermoFlex artificial muscle system. It's hard to believe that earlier this year we only had the concept and research for the product that we are now putting on the market. Our vision at Delta Robotics is to build the world's most capable actuator for prosthetic and bionic applications. There is still a long R&D journey left for our ThermoFlex muscles. Luckily, we have the talent, technology, and drive to achieve that vision. I am extremely proud of the engineering team we have built and the tenacity of its members. This past year, we have overcome significant challenges, as all startups do in order to stay afloat and get a product to market. It has been a thrilling, uncertain, and extremely satisfying experience. I know that my team shares the appreciation for these experiences. My cofounders and I owe them so much for taking a chance on this company and fulfilling critical needs in our infancy. The biggest mistake startup founders in #robotics make is not being hyper-focused on commercialization. It’s easy to fall in love with building technology – who doesn’t want to be the first to solve a groundbreaking problem? But companies don’t buy #technology because it’s cutting-edge; they buy it to solve pressing needs, maximize ROI, and minimize risk. Companies are more likely to adopt new technology when it’s presented as a logical step in their evolution, not a radical change in their operations. By being technology-centric instead of customer-first, you risk developing a solution that is over-engineered and overpriced relative to customer needs. I’ve been there… When we founded Photoneo, our mission was to create the most advanced 3D camera ever. And we did that with the MotionCam-3D. But early on, we realized the market wasn’t ready for such a leap. So before developing MotionCam, we released our PhoXi scanner – still market-leading but less advanced and lower cost. That enabled us to generate millions in revenue early on while MotionCam gained product-market fit and customer adoption. With Brightpick, we first developed a mobile sorter, then a Goods-to-Person solution, followed by a Goods-to-Robot solution, before finally releasing our multiple award-winning Brightpick Autopicker robot last year. This strategy allowed us to gather real-life data and test our products with customers early-on all while bringing in much-needed revenue and funding along the way. Had we tried doing everything at once, we would’ve burned through all our funding before achieving sufficient commercial traction. I see a similar risk for many humanoid startups today. Some are hugely over-funded, but most don’t have the luxury of infinite funding. Once the novelty of doing pilots wears off, companies will struggle to justify paying 5-10x more for a cutting-edge humanoid when other #robots can do the same task better.

Great advice. I see companies make this mistake every day. Making one more self-congratulatory "we're excited to announce" post isn't going to sell your product. What makes the difference is showing potential customers how your product solves their real-world problems. People need to see themselves using your product to address their challenges. They need to know, like, and trust your company. They need to think of your company first whenever the need arises. This approach transforms your cutting-edge technology from a novelty into an essential tool. By focusing on how your technology integrates seamlessly into their operations and enhances their ROI, you create a compelling narrative that resonates. Being innovative might get you kudos, but being indispensable will get you sales.
