Stuck in traffic and going nowhere in Dubai. I have been visiting the Big5 exhibition in Dubai and the Summits discussing the topic of “Livable Cities” this week. It was disappointing to see that the panelists and speakers failed to address the most glaring issue affecting livability in the city: traffic congestion. Despite Dubai’s well-known lack of traffic lights between Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, Sheikh Zayed Road remains a constant bottleneck. The primary cause of this is the erratic and reckless behavior of drivers changing lanes abruptly in order to reach exits, contributing to gridlock that only seems to worsen over time. This is not a new problem, yet it continues to be ignored by both the experts and authorities, who missed a critical opportunity to address it. With the road being under constant surveillance, it should be relatively simple to identify and penalize those drivers who are causing disruptions through dangerous lane changes. Other practical solutions—such as creating dedicated lanes to prevent sudden lane shifts, improving signage, or implementing stricter penalties for poor driving behavior—seem like common sense measures that could greatly improve traffic flow. As a city that prides itself on innovation, Dubai could easily experiment with these solutions in the form of trials. By testing the impact of these changes, the city could evaluate real-world results and improve overall livability. However, it appears that the lack of critical thought on this issue during the exhibition left a glaring gap in the discussion on how to make Dubai more livable.
