Crunch culture is something the game dev community knows all too well. From indie teams to AAA studios, we’ve all heard the stories—or lived them. This is something we need to talk about because we can do better, together. Here’s what I’ve learned from my own crunch-time experiences: 1️⃣ Set boundaries: The best ideas come from well-rested minds. 2️⃣ Prioritize ruthlessly: Not every feature needs to make the final cut. 3️⃣ Celebrate progress: A polished, small game is better than a big, unfinished one. My cousin just graduated with a degree in Computer Science and asked me for advice to crack into the game market. I wrote to her: "I recommend a few things: 1.) Continue to build your portfolio with personal projects on your Github 2.) Start going to events in LA / SF to network and get yourself out there (Connections >>>> Resume) 3.) Get on Linkedin, start posting work and connecting with people 4.) Enter contests / game sprints / hackathons... The market is tough (as you already know), so you're going to have to put a ton of effort into outreach and get your name out there. AAA devs (Riot, Blizzard, Nintendo) aren't really interested in jr. devs right now, so you're likely going to have to find a start-up or indie studio and work your way up from there. Happy to share that I had the incredible opportunity to be part of this talented team (Pabadhi Liyanage, Chamod Shyamal, Chamod Kavinda) to develop a Unity WebGL game and a questionnaire-based web application aimed at promoting energy conservation and supporting electricity demand-supply management. As part of the team, I contributed to developing the backend for the questionnaire application using Spring Boot and MySQL. Joni Vähämäki, our CTO and co-founder, has always been passionate about games. And not just playing the games but understanding how they work and how to create them. 👾👇 💬 “I started experimenting with building games when I found programs for creating games without coding understanding. Later I got involved in hobby projects where games were built with an international team. Those projects ignited the idea that maybe this could be something I could do professionally." In 2015, Joni was looking for an engaging project for his master's thesis. Prof. Perttu Hämälainen from Aalto University Game Research introduced Joni to Raine Kajastila who was running a game research commercialization project – a climbing wall experiment aimed at motivating people to move. 💬 "I was excited to get to work on an unconventional game platform that would encourage people to move." 🧗♀️ Joni was focusing on the technological aspect of the project: how to recognize a person and their actions on the wall. 💻 In addition, he was working on game design and development.
