"Gotta love" #Caldas da Rainha! We're delighted to call it "our home away from the U.S.". Here's the back wall of the small coffee shop next to the bus station: it is a panel of tiles created by Studio Pedrita in #Lisbon. Their panels use "...discontinued Portuguese industrial tiles. Using a digital base, dozens of tiles are laid side-by-side composing a wider image [enabling] two possible readings of a specific image, each corresponding to a specific distance between the panel and the observer". Their panels are usually made up of hundreds of 15x15cm tiles recuperated from factories that are no longer in existence. #sustainability #azulejo #upcycling

# 448 HOSPITALITY, China Jazz renaissance. Thanks to a dear friend, I discovered this fascinating place with a truly unique history. It’s a jazz club built on the remnants of an old sewer in China. The venue is called the Xiu Jazz Club, spanning an impressive 1,300 square meters. It has already received several prestigious international awards. Designed by Neri&Hu under the umbrella of Stellar Works—the first leading global contemporary furniture design brand from Asia, based in Shanghai—the space embodies exceptional creativity and craftsmanship. Final paper in the cultural heritage session at the International Place Branding Association (IPBA) conference #Bangkok, Adam Johns examines the relationship between attempts promote local and regional craft aligns with Japan’s national brand. Examples of local promotion can be found at major international trade exbitions, particularly in Paris. In short, municipal and regional government has taken on a role in articulating a brand narrative at a national level. For places there is certain providence or cache in displaying craft produce at international events, whereas buyers are much less concerned with place distinction, other than the assurance products are authentically produced. It appears then that cities like Kyoto are establishing themselves a places with a reputation for craft production which attract buyers and perhaps other visitors to Japan. However Kyoto has managed this through consistent curatational control over several years. Elsewhere local strategies just add to a sense of Japan-ness without necessarily producing strong local/regional economic development benefits. There is an implication is that the collective efforts of different cities to promote craft produce may inadvertently be contributing to Kyoto’s reputation.
