Transforming Black Lives now has a website. Our $2.5 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada seeks to address the needs of Black children and youth in Canada. The objective of this SSHRC Partnership project is to facilitate the creation and maintenance of a national research network, informed by critical race theory, to address the needs and concerns of Black children and youths (0 to 24 years) in Canada, as follows: • Co-create knowledge, multi-faceted solutions and interventions to tackle this group's overrepresentation in the criminal justice and child welfare systems, poor educational outcomes, and settlement concerns---via participatory action research (PAR). • Create an interdisciplinary, intersectoral, and bilingual network, centre, and knowledge hub to mobilize evidence to improve this group's well-being and build capacity---by engaging researchers, trainees, policymakers, Black communities, and service providers across Canada. • Train students and postdoctoral (PDF) researchers, including Black youths---facilitating their transition to academic and non-academic workplace settings. https://lnkd.in/gDQYSXdJ

The Weight of the World: Uplifting Black Men in Media, Leadership, and Life: Part 3 Conclusion: A Shared Responsibility The fight for justice and equity for Black men is not theirs to bear alone—it is a shared responsibility. Every one of us has a role to play, whether it’s challenging bias, supporting Black-owned businesses, mentoring young Black men, or demanding systemic reform. Black men have shown the world their resilience time and again. But resilience should not be a necessity—it should be a choice. By addressing the injustices they face, we can create a world where Black men are free to dream, lead, and thrive without the weight of oppression on their shoulders. Lives depend on this awareness. Communities depend on these solutions. Humanity depends on our willingness to act. The time for change is now. #ConversationsForChange © Michael Buckner 2024

A UW System Center of Excellence, C21 builds a community of scholars to address the pressing issues of our time. Each year, C21 offers fellowships that provide the time, space, and collegial support to generate new knowledge and ideas. C21 centers the humanities in its belief that innovation comes from diversity of opinions, disciplines, and experiences. Marcus Anthony Allen, a current C21 research fellow, is a historian of African American History and Business History. His research interests include Nineteenth Century American History, the History of American Capitalism, North American Slavery, Labor History, and the American Presidents. Allen is currently an Assistant Professor in the History Department at UW-Milwaukee. Allen has taught at a number of different PWIs and HBCUs, namely, Morgan State University, James Madison University, NC A&T State University, Miami University and Case Western Reserve University. His current book project, under contract with the University of Georgia Press, is an examination of African-American savings accounts before and after the Civil War. Allen triangulates bank, land, census and property tax records, death certificates, and San born insurance maps in the process of understanding black economic life in Baltimore’s nineteenth century black community. Yesterday marked the beginning of Black History Month with this year’s theme of #reclaimingthenarrative As I headed into London for another workshop today, I stopped and reflected on the National Windrush Monument at Waterloo. I remembered the stories my parents, my aunts and my uncles had shared with me of their journey from the sunny island of Jamaica to their experience of being invited to help rebuild England. I wasn’t taught Black History at school - there was a nod to the role that Britain played in ending the trade of enslavement but that was it. There was no mention or celebration of the Black leaders, scientists, medics, engineers, activists, artists, military officers and more that made great contributions to Great Britain and the world. I only learned Black history from my parents who bridged the gap, encouraging me to learn and have the inner confidence to put myself out there and go for my hearts desire. The theme for this year’s Black History month is “reclaiming the narrative”. I was taught early in business that past performance is a predictor of future performance, and in the same vein, when we learn about the positive contributions that Black people historically played in society, there is a greater understanding of the future successes that can be built within organisations through strengthening equity, diversity and inclusion.
