I forgot to provide commentary to this piece by Steve Ruddock as promised which was an absolute shame. it's a great example of advancing the discussion around cannibalization making it far more contextually relevant and meaningful. I still plan to add my own perspective on the topic though since I think the perspective that is still missing is the player behaviour angle. For me the missing link is to - based on established player types - map out WHAT ( rather than how much) spending migrates between live and online. Some spend is additive and grows the overall market. Some migration causes negative ripple effects. Etc. Mapping this out will help see through the noise and provide guidance for number crunchers eager to look further into this. It's basically an exercise in ecosystem modelling quite similar to the work done to understand poker ecologies back in the day.
This week's feature column examines the still-unresolved debate over the impact of online gambling on land-based casinos. https://lnkd.in/ewHmefC9 FIRST, I believe opposition to regulated online gambling is a massive mistake, and done correctly, online and land-based can not only coexist but will work well together. BUT (there's always a but), it's hard to argue that online concerns are unfounded.

Did you know that self-exclusion is available at 87% of online casinos worldwide? A big portion of those offer it without the regulatory requirement. Sounds like a solid protection standard, right? The devil is in the details. Without proper implementation and management, effectiveness is in peril. Even modern regulation is not aligned. Each jurisdiction sets its own specific rules relating to the duration of self-exclusion, initiation, termination and the responsibilities accrued to players and operators as a result of entry into self-exclusion schemes. Help us change that. The standardisation of safer gambling tools would benefit not only individual players but also regulators, operators, researchers and other stakeholders. By providing your feedback on the recommendation draft, you will help to underpin the final consideration and the creation of the final Code of Conduct, which we hope will benefit all. The link is in the comments. Thank you!
