With temperatures well below freezing this week, Southern Air wanted to remind you of a few steps to keep your home warm and your HVAC system running smoothly. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you're prepared: Turn On Emergency Heat: If your heat pump is struggling to keep up with the cold, switch your system to emergency heat. This will provide supplemental heat to maintain comfort while preventing strain on your unit. Let Faucets Drip: To avoid frozen pipes, let a small stream of water drip from your faucets—especially those along exterior walls. This helps prevent the pipes from freezing and bursting. Clear Your Vents: Make sure all vents and air returns are unobstructed by furniture or curtains. This allows your system to distribute heat more efficiently. Change Your Filter: A clean air filter ensures your system runs efficiently and avoids overworking, which can lead to breakdowns in extreme temperatures. Seal Drafts: Check for drafts around windows and doors. Seal them to keep warm air in and cold air out—this can also improve your energy efficiency. Keep Your Thermostat Steady: Set your thermostat to a consistent temperature to avoid unnecessary strain on your HVAC system. Rapid temperature changes can wear out components faster. Check for Ice or Snow on Outdoor Units: If you have a heat pump, check for ice buildup on the outdoor unit. Gently remove snow or ice to ensure proper airflow. Stay safe, warm, and comfortable! If you're having trouble with your HVAC system, give Southern Air Residential a call—we’re here to help! #ColdWeatherTips #WinterReady #SouthernAir #HVACCare #HomeMaintenance #StayWarm #WinterTips #FrozenPipes #EmergencyHeat

As summer temperatures are predicted to rise above historical averages, it is important to ensure the cooling systems in your home or business are running properly. Tony Abate, HVAC specialist, VP and CTO of AtmosAir Solutions, was recently featured in #HomesandGardens to share his knowledge regarding a widespread summer issue. The most common reason for a smelly air conditioner is the accumulation of mold and mildew within the unit. Typical causes for this growth include clogged drain pans, dirty air filters, and leaking ductwork. For this issue, Abate suggests that you thoroughly clean all of the affected parts with a mold-inhibiting cleaner and ensure that all drainage systems are clear and functional. You can try using an antibacterial bathroom cleaner to make sure the parts are cleaned and disinfected effectively. Regularly changing your air filter (every 1-3 months) and turning off your AC's fresh air intake is also essential for preventing these smells.
