Here is another example of .. up cycling a product or service .. Lithium which is used in batteries is sourced through strip mining and evaporation ponds. Now, scientists are finding a way to extract it from shale and pirite. Since, fracking extracts gas and oil from shale, the waste product of lithium could be up cycled for use in batteries. https://lnkd.in/g42MEf_V

We are pleased to be running a Critical and Strategic Metals Symposium here at CODES - Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences in Hobart on 10th-12th July, 2024. Rare Earth Elements are listed as critical metals (minerals or materials) by most countries, that are vital to green energy transition, advanced manufacturing and defence technology. Rare Earth Elements are, in fact, not rare, but they are of extremely low abundances on the planet, which are notoriously challenging to enrich and accumulate as economically valuable masses as well as to sustainable mining and processing. I am organising a session on Rare Earth Elements, as part of CODES’ Critical and Strategic Metals Symposium. We have a stellar lineup of speakers for this session, including Ignacio Gonzalez-Alvarez, Kathy Ehrig, Arianne Ford, and Michael Anenburg. An-hour panel discussion will follow these invited talks. You are welcome to attend this event with us and listen to how these inspiring experts provide their solutions and thoughts to tackle with the challenges, regarding the formation, exploration and/or production pathways of Rare Earth Elements. Registration details can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gU8kZRB6 and you also can scan the barcode to check the full agenda, including other sessions on Lithium, Tin-Tungsten, Cobalt-Copper, and Nickle-Copper. There are discounted places available for university researchers, so please get in touch to find out more information! #CODES David Cooke Yamila Cajal Contreras Lejun Zhang Owen Missen Sheree Armistead Paula Montoya Julie Hunt Ivan Belousov #rareearth #criticalmetal #criticalmineral #criticalmaterial

"A Quest for Continuous Improvement”: AI in Critical Mineral Mining Recently at the Penn State Materials Conference a breakout session was held on AI in Critical Minerals. With the implementation of AI in most industries these days, from health care to mining, energy generation and manufacturing, to name a few, you have to wonder where all the materials come from to manufacture and implement AI technologies. Critical Minerals play a pivotal role in AI as the building blocks for the manufactured components and increased efficiencies, smaller sized devices, and longer lasting technologies. Of course, we also have to mine and convert these critical minerals into something tangible. It was exciting and informative to hear from the panel members on how AI can be used to align resource characterization while improving productivity and sustainability in critical mineral recovery as well as impacts to supply chain, and overall increase in efficiencies and emissions reduction. Sio is committed to continuous improvement and plans to utilize AI to improve operational efficiency, environmental monitoring and protection, and predictive maintenance and safety. Taking away new learnings and technology platforms from leading academic’s and professionals to impart into one’s organization is always exciting and appreciated. ▶ Meet Our Speaker: Douglas Pino Herrera from BRGM will be joining us at the CASPEO DAYS 2024 conference! Douglas will explain how process simulation could feed the Life Cycle Assessment of emerging technologies for the production of mineral raw materials. Obtaining the materials required for the energy transition involves implementing circular economy approaches for the transformation of mineral resources and the production of strategic and critical raw materials. Adapting and rethinking current technologies, as well as developing new processes, becomes necessary to achieve the goals set by the EU. This must be done considering not only technical and economic aspects but also potential environmental impacts. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a valuable tool for understanding these impacts and identifying environmental hotspots, which must be considered to enhance the environmental performance of the new processes. However, the data required to obtain reliable results and conclusions are very often not available for these emerging technologies. Process simulation can fill this gap by integrating numerical models for the process units lacking the necessary information. ▶ 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗹𝗲́𝗮𝗻𝘀 (𝗟𝗼𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘅 - 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲) 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗔𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗢 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, a conference to leverage the power of data reconciliation, simulation, modeling, and metal accounting, "On the path towards Intelligent Mining". 🔶 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻: 29-30 May 2024 🔶 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: Orléans city in France 👉 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘄: https://lnkd.in/eFHw8M8R Registration ends on May 17, 2024. #Mining #ProcessSimulation #LCA #FutureofMining #MiningIndustry

Ross Youngs' Biosortia, Inc. - Microbiomics #Government "Ideation Series" give it a watch! Looking for #Partners for opportunities #DOD #DARPA #DOE #DTRA #ARPA #NIH #microbes (Summary) Scientists have traditionally been able to study only about 1% of the microbial world because they can only grow a small fraction of these organisms in the lab. This has limited access to the vast array of small molecules that microbes produce, which could significantly advance fields such as medicine, agriculture, sustainability, military preparedness, and energy. Industrial Scale Microbiome Mining involves obtaining large quantities of microbial biomass to process, concentrate, and isolate these valuable small molecules from natural microbiomes. By accessing and analyzing these molecules and the datasets generated, we can drive significant advancements in biotechnology and unlock new discoveries that were previously hidden.
