AMANOS Machinery & Engineering - in collaboration with Migros Ticaret transforms food waste into sellable products using zero-waste technology.   Atık Nakit - digitalising and optimising the recycling collection, urban cleaning and garbage collection operations of municipalities and waste collector companies.   Bio4Life - using biotech to develop biopigments that eliminate the environmental damage and health problems caused by chemical dyes.   Hatko Sound Barriers - “2 Pollution 1 Solution”: Creating recycled rubber noise barriers made from end-of-life tyres as a solution to noise pollution and tyre waste.   Izmir Metropolitan Municipality - using electric cargo bikes for deliveries in historical Kemeraltı Bazaar reducing the time taken and cost of deliveries as well as reducing carbon emissions.    Kybele's Garden - developing sustainable and circular technologies and products for the agrifood and cosmetics sectors using algae biotechnology.   ni-cat - custom designs cathode active materials for mission-critical batteries and provides process support to clients for fast scale-up to commercial manufacturing.   Pikare - award-winning 'carbon negative-water positive and zero waste' off-grid system that extracts clean drinking water directly from air using renewable energy. Embracing sustainability for a greener tomorrow! On this World Environment Day, let's highlight MIFB’s sustainable journey for 2024: 1. Last year, we achieved a milestone by transforming 33KG of food waste into 10KG of nutrient-rich compost through our waste management efforts. 2. We're stepping up our waste reduction initiatives by introducing new methods to effectively recycle food waste generated during the event and materials from the booths. 3. In July 2024, we are aiming to set a new record in collecting food waste. The compost created from this will be generously donated to urban farms in Semenyih and Rawang, supporting their sustainable farming practices. I recently had the opportunity to participate in the Greenweek Festival in Italy, which promotes the green economy, and visited several factories focused on green and sustainable manufacturing, including Amorim Cork, Cielo e Terra, Fitt, Irsap, and Montebello. This experience provided me with valuable insights into operational management and sustainable practices in manufacturing. One of the key takeaways from the event was my visit to the Montebello tannery, which sparked an idea for exploring the potential of establishing a tanning industry in Mongolia. With around 70 million livestock, Mongolia produces a vast quantity of hides. Unfortunately, due to a lack of advanced technology and a developed tanning industry, most of these hides go to waste. There is significant potential to harness this resource, implement eco-friendly tanning processes, and create a more sustainable, value-added industry in Mongolia.

South Africa: How consumer demand is driving change in food packaging Consumer demand for sustainable food packaging has become a major catalyst for change in the industry. With a growing awareness of environmental impacts, consumers are now choosing products with reduced packaging waste and materials that are recyclable and as a result, companies are being compelled to innovate and develop eco-friendly packaging solutions. According to a KLA YourView poll of 692 South African consumers, 34% indicated that sustainability and eco-friendliness are a priority when making packaging choices. The food packaging industry is experiencing a remarkable shift towards eco-friendly innovations, which includes the use of biodegradable and compostable materials, recyclable packaging solutions, and reusable packaging systems. PET's Head of Grants and Mobilisation, Ameena Rahman, represented Net Zero Pakistan at the Swedish Embassy and Business Sweden launch event of the Sustainable Textile Platform Launch on the 26th of June. The event brought together sourcing companies, producers, public sector decision makers and academia to be a force for good in the textile sector.   Key areas of focus: ▫ Circularity: Embracing circular economy principles to minimize waste and promote the continual use of resources. ▫ Water Treatment: Implementing state-of-the-art water management solutions to ensure efficient use and recycling of water, addressing one of the most pressing environmental concerns in textile manufacturing. ▫ Renewable Energy: Transitioning to renewable energy sources to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainable energy consumption within the industry. By leveraging Swedish technology and innovation, the objective of the platform is to both enhance sustainability in the Pakistani textile industry and to improve productivity and product quality, making it more competitive on the global stage. ICYMI: In August 2024, we unveiled a waste treatment facility at the Colba Tannery in Modjo, Ethiopia! 🎉 Funded by the European Union under the “Leather Initiative for Sustainable Employment Creation” project, this facility aims to reduce the environmental impact of leather processing while promoting green technology transfer and creating sustainable jobs. 🌱 The facility recycles tannery waste into products like organic glue and protein extract, boosting sectors like small-scale manufacturing and agriculture. With a capacity to produce 400 kg of valuable products daily, it serves as a model for nationwide eco-friendly waste management. Between 2021-2024, the LISEC project advanced sustainable leather practices, contributing to a greener future for Ethiopia’s leather industry. Speaking about industry developments, Wei noted a significant shift toward sustainability and circular economy practices. “This year, I’ve noticed many players in the marketplace paying attention to the environment and the planet we live on. A lot of companies are now involved in the circular economy and recycled products” she stated. Highlighting ICL’s contributions, Wei introduced Puraloop 38, an innovative product derived from sewage sludge ash. “With Puraloop 38, we are turning waste into a valuable fertilizer that feeds crops and supports global food security,” she explained. “It’s a perfect example of how we can take a waste product and transform it into something that benefits the environment and helps sustain the global population.” Wei described the initiative as central to ICL’s sustainability agenda, showcasing the company’s dedication to addressing environmental challenges while advancing agricultural innovation.
