When I was a little kid one of my favourite movies to watch on TV in the 80s was Battle Beyond the Stars. I think I may have even gone to the cinema to see it aged 7. As I became mad into movies I loved the stories you heard around the making of Battle Beyond the Stars - which combined Star Wars with Seven Samurai (Star Wars itself was influenced by Hidden Fortress - another Japanese movie great). Legend had it that Roger Corman, the man behind the film, was a formidable force creatively. It was often joked that Corman could negotiate a contract from a public phone, shoot the film in the phone box and pay for it with the coins in the change slot. He'd encourage his set designers and special effects teams to think differently regarding how they achieved what they needed to. This resulted in upside down takeaway cartons being spray painted and used as panels on the spaceship interior. Over the decades many famous filmmakers would cut their teeth with Roger Corman. Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, James Cameron and Martin Scorsese are just a few of the filmmaking professionals who owe their careers to Corman. Make no mistake, he made a lot of B-movies (crap) did Corman... but one thing you should always remember is he made a career out of it and no doubt had a lot of fun along the way. How many of us can say that about our careers? Rest in peace Mr Corman. Your work here is done. WHAT’S A SOUL WORTH ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE UNIVERSE? WHAT’S a soul worth anywhere, period? I’m of the belief that the soul is our guide after death to our next realm of being, and that it is the collection of all of our mortal experiences which together decide where it will guide us. Heaven? Hell? Or are these just summations for how we will regard our next life? According to an extension of Multiverse Theory, the where would be one of an infinite number of universes, ranging from another just like this one, to one so exotic that none of the laws of physics apply. Heaven? Hell? Or Both? It all depends on future perspective. So what of the movie OTOSOTU (pronounced “Oh-Toe-So-Two” for “On The Other Side Of The Universe”) based on the screenplay by incomparable author/screenwriter William Maltese? in the film, sentient, immortal, omniscient, bodiless entities have evolved to the point where, without senses, it is questionable whether they even have a soul and can progress any further in their life journey. The proposal upon meeting Commander Michael Mylo (played by multi-award-winning actor Daniel S. Janik) and crew of the hapless astership Twilon: Hundreds of abandoned, advanced technology planets to colonize for the right to “ride” in human bodies and once again experience life. But how will this affect the souls of the human hosts? Dominie-in-Grey Carol Mylo, Michael’s wife (played by multi-award-winning actress Sakura Kai), and Captain-Major Brit Mylo, Michael’s son (also played by Daniel S. Janik), harbor major doubts. Pablo Berger’s dialogue-free film Robot Dreams promises a sweet, heartfelt ride through loneliness and the giddy highs of a new friendship. Even if that friendship has been hand-built from out of a box. Based on Sara Varon’s graphic novel, the animated film follows Dog, a New Yorker who orders a DIY BFF in Robot. As you can see from all the Central Park roller skating, subway turnstile jumping, and hotdog inhaling in the trailer, Manhattan’s quite the setting for this unlikely bond. Robot Dreams premiered at Cannes Film Festival last year, then hit the Toronto International Film Festival.
