The siren call of fmcg is hard to resist, especially when you’ve been under its spell for more than two decades. Just ask Roger White, who has postponed his much-publicised retirement to take the helm at Irish drinks giant C&C Group. During his 22-year stint at the helm of AG Barr Group – one of the longest at any UK public company – White transformed the business from a regional Scottish supplier to a national soft drinks player via a slew of acquisitions, including Rubicon, Funkin, Boost and Moma Foods. His appointment looks like a significant coup for C&C, and one that comes at a critical time for the supplier. C&C insists it is making progress on returning to profitable growth, but investor confidence is wearing thin, following a torrid couple of years. What an all star line up, with a room full of all star women (and a few men)! 🤩Inspiring to start the day with so many incredibly smart and thoughtful minds. 💫 The discussion caused me to pause more than I ever have about investing and financially investing in women startups. 💰 Elizabeth, the panel’s moderator and amazing woman, offered pointed context about there being so many philanthropic southern women who are very generous in their giving, and asked how do you influence and rethink that type of giving into investing, especially in women??…💡💡 The struggle and statistics are real in investing in women startups, and in the workplace. Anna, one of the panelists and another amazing woman, made a very matter of fact, observational comment reflecting exactly that, “Women get promoted on performance. Men get promoted on potential”. 🎭 We need to change and influence that. I believe we can, together. What are your thoughts on how we influence the mindset of investing in women? * Women-founded startups accounted for 2% or less of venture capital (VC) funding invested in Europe and the United States in 2023, Pitchbook data finds. * But by VC deal numbers, women are making gains over the longer term. Reed Smith and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher have both announced the appointment of new leaders in London. Reed Smith named Brigid North (left) as London managing partner, while Gibson Dunn named Robert Carr (top right) and Osma Hudda (bottom right) as co-partners in charge. All assumed their roles on January 1, with North taking over from London managing partner Andrew Jenkinson who has been in the post since 2015. North joined Reed Smith as a trainee in 2003 and was promoted to partner in 2015. Jenkinson remains a partner in the global real estate practice. 🎙️ On an October afternoon, with Ecuador enduring its worst drought in over six decades and between blackouts, we took the time to explore challenges facing small grocery stores in Ecuador and Latin America.
