Hand sanitisers have become an indispensable part of our daily lives, especially in the wake of global health challenges. But have you ever wondered about the origins of this essential hygiene product? The story of hand sanitisers is both fascinating and multifaceted, with multiple inventors and milestones contributing to its evolution.
One popular narrative credits Lupe Hernandez, a nursing student from Bakersfield, California, who in 1966 combined alcohol and gel to create a solution for doctors to sanitise their hands quickly in emergency situations. Despite the lack of concrete evidence or patent records confirming her invention, Hernandez’s story highlights the innovative spirit behind early hand sanitiser development.
Another key figure in the history of hand sanitisers is the married couple Goldie and Jerry Lippman. In 1946, they developed a waterless hand cleaner named Gojo, designed for rubber factory workers dealing with harsh chemicals. This product, a mix of petroleum jelly, mineral oil, and alcohol, paved the way for the hand sanitisers we know today. The Lippmans' company, GOJO Industries, later introduced Purell in 1988, a gel-based sanitiser that became a household name by the late 1990s.
Meanwhile, in Europe, the German company Hartmann launched Sterillium in 1965, claiming it as the world’s first marketable alcohol-based hand sanitiser. This product contained 75% alcohol and glycerin, marking a significant advancement in the formulation of hand disinfectants.
As we honour these pioneering efforts, RBT is committed to advancing this crucial invention. Our alcohol-free disinfectants represent the next generation of hand hygiene products, providing superior efficacy without the drawbacks of traditional alcohol-based sanitisers. Our Protectus Viridis range offers long-lasting protection for up to 4 hours, ensuring continuous defence against pathogens. Unlike alcohol-based sanitisers, Protectus Viridis is effective against threats such as norovirus, offering a more comprehensive hygiene solution.
