ASFI CEO Kristy Graham chaired an excellent panel on blended finance at the Climate Investor Forum 2025 with leaders in the field Ian Learmonth, Christina Tonkin, Rod Bristow and Alan Schwartz AO. Together, they tackled some of the big questions: Q: What is the secret to scaling blended finance? ✔ Get in early, exit once markets are established. ✔ Keep the approach conventional—but innovate where needed. ✔ Partner effectively with commercial players and intermediaries. ✔ Share learnings proactively to accelerate market-wide learnings. Q: How do you get the risk appetite right as a public or philanthropic funder? ✔ Take risks, but don’t lose amount of money that might threaten licence to operate. ✔ Educate stakeholders on why risk (and sometimes failure) is necessary. ✔ Provide assurance in how risks are managed.
