Remote access tools are still opening doors — to ransomware. In our latest research, we found that 80% of direct ransomware incidents began with tools like VPNs, RDP, and other remote access methods. That’s a sharp rise from 63% in 2023. The risk is especially high for companies still relying on legacy platforms like on-prem Microsoft Exchange or VPN appliances from Cisco, Citrix, SonicWall, and Fortinet. These systems continue to be prime targets for attackers.
