Front-loading is one of the most powerful tools for classroom management and maximising learning time (as long as the means are communicated explicitly, concisely, and clearly). Being intentional and mindful of it all the time in both lesson planning and delivery is a game changer. I call it 'Yoda teaching'. Just flip what you were going to say, so that how the students have to participate is always before what content or skills they have to think about/work with. It's amazing the impact this small tweak has. The first sentence I say in every lesson segment is now always something like "with a hand in the air...", "by writing on your mini white board ..." , "when I say go, tell your partner...", "ready to answer if I say your name..." etc.
The more time teachers use for introducing learning material and practicing with it (time on task), the more and better students learn. Unfortunately, teachers often lose significant amounts of valuable instructional time on classroom management issues.
