𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗜 At the recent EmTech 2024 conference on Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, I had the opportunity to highlight robotics. One of the key takeaways the audience had is the convergence of advancements in sensor, computation, and AI algorithms with their combined power to rapidly accelerate robotics technologies. Like AI, robotics technology is not new. Below are the three distinct phases of its evolution:  • 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟭 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀. Industrial robotics applications, particularly those used in the automative industry started decades ago, handling fixed singular purpose tasks.  • 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟮 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 “𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁” 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲. Still fixed in position, but enhanced vision and “standalone-bot AI” enabled the robots to handle more varied items and tasks.  • 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟯 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 “𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁” 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀. Powered with advanced vision, faster computation, and more sophisticated AI algorithms, with more dexterity and mobility, and the ability to handle complex tasks. Simply put, Physical AI has ushered in a new era in robotics technologies. 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝗘𝗘 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗙𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀, leading to broad applications and use cases ranging from healthcare to warehouses. In a recent post about Oshkosh’s AI journey, I was asked how I see AI integrated into other digital technologies like robotics and IIoT.    At Oshkosh, we see a close correlation between cognitive and physical automation through AI. We are advancing our cognitive and physical automation journey in parallel.
