What purpose do Museums serve? When fact-checking is so easy using Google and Wikipedia and YouTube is awash with documentaries, you could be forgiven for thinking, that Museums might be a thing of the past (excuse the pun). But the good news is that we have hundreds of Museums of all shapes and sizes with terrific stories to tell. While the pandemic in 2020/21 was an obvious disruption for Museums, many benefitted from the reorganisation as even basic things like the layout of exhibits and visitor routes had to be designed to be more efficient. https://lnkd.in/egbP2XMR

Juneteenth (June 19th) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. June 19th officially became a federal holiday in 2021. I encourage you to read more about Juneteenth here: The Historical Legacy of Juneteenth | National Museum of African American History and Culture (si.edu) (See below) Also, here is some of the text from the Emancipation Proclamation: "That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive Government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom” Abraham Lincoln You should know this, but if not, The Emancipation Proclamation did not lead to the Civil War. The Civil War started two years earlier in 1861, primarily over disagreements over slavery, and ended in 1865.

Ten years ago today, I joined 9/11 family members, rescue and recovery workers, and survivors, to dedicate the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Today it stands as a permanent reminder of those killed, and the service, bravery, and compassion of those who stood together in unity during those dark hours. The 9/11 Memorial Museum preserves an essential moment in our history for future generations, ensuring that we will never forget. Join me in visiting the #911Museum, which will now offer free admission to New Yorkers on the first Monday of each month beginning June 3.

Don't just keep those extra pieces in a backroom where nobody can see it! The Museum of the Red River (Idabel, OK) displays a huge collection of items behind a wall of glass where all guests can see them. LESSON: Tear down solid walls and put up glass walls for more exhibit space without needing a larger floor plan. This is a short clip of Brenda Granger (from the Oklahoma Museums Association) on an episode of The Condition Report. Read the latest about one of our recent projects.
I am honored to share that the Neill-Cochran House Museum is the recipient of two awards, the Stewardship Award and the Preservation Award for Restoration, for Reckoning with the Past, the restoration of Austin's last intact slave dwelling, as a part of Preservation Austin's 2024 Preservation Merit Awards! This project was made possible by the tireless efforts of Dr. Rowena Dasch of the Neill-Cochran House Museum, Dr. Tara Dudley from the University of Texas, and my Fermata team (including Maja Smith of MajaDesign and iZone). This award is a testament to the dedication and commitment of this amazing group of professionals of which I was honored to be a participant. Join us at the annual Preservation Merit Awards Ceremony, which spotlights visionary approaches to preserving our city’s unique heritage. The following is a link to Preservation Austin's website for more information about the ceremony in November. https://lnkd.in/gXniC3ha
