Did you know that 80% of the clothes we own ends up in landfills? Baker Hughes recently hosted a thought-provoking discussion about sustainable fashion. Here are three things you can do today to help tackle this critical topic: 1️⃣ Extend shelf life of your clothing as much as possible. Mend it as needed, swap, or re-use it in different ways. 2️⃣ Resist the urge to splurge on fast fashion. Spend on few high quality pieces in your wardrobe and get creative with it. 3️⃣ Support small businesses that source ethically - labor conditions in the fashion industry in developing countries are often deplorable; be aware and think before you spend. Sustainable change starts with each of us, every day, making sustainable choices. With concerns rising on whether sustainability will no longer be playing a leading role in the fashion industry in 2025 (as written by Olivia Pinnock in her insightful Forbes article) the Global Circular Fashion Forum is an extremely relevant initiative to keep our eyes on. By bridging the gap between the many players involved in a garment’s production (from brands, to manufacturers, to the nations themselves) the GCFF is determined to keep sustainability at the forefront of fashion this year, and should inspire us to do the same.
The Global Circular Fashion Forum: Transforming Waste into Opportunity In the latest editorial, we take a step back to outline the initiatives behind the Global Circular Fashion Forum. Launched by Global Fashion Agenda in June 2022, the GCFF addresses one of fashion’s most pressing challenges: post-industrial textile waste. This ambitious initiative emerged from the need to create a fashion industry that not only produces less waste but transforms it into value. By bringing together global brands, manufacturers, and policymakers, the GCFF aims to scale sustainable systems across textile-producing nations and drive meaningful change from the ground up. Sustainability leaders say there is an "urgent need" for the #fashion industry to change its ways. #Sustainable fashion practices — and how to incorporate them into companies’ product design, supply chains and corporate decision making — was the overarching theme at the United Nations Fashion and Lifestyle Network annual meeting Monday. #ESGDive was on the ground to cover the third iteration of the event, which gathered sustainability leaders, academic experts, industry stakeholders and #UN representatives and advisory committee members from across the globe with the aim of accelerating implementation of the UN’s sustainable development goals. Attendees — from Recover, The LYCRA Company, SWAROVSKI, Parsons School of Design - The New School and others — proposed solutions the fashion industry could undertake to curb its #carbonfootprint throughout panel discussions, emphasizing the dire need of addressing the sector’s role in global carbon emissions. Read more in my feature piece for ESG Dive below.
